So I'm currently in the market for another car. I've become bored with mine after 3 years ownership and looking for something a little more exciting.

Browsing craigslist, I came across a local dealer selling a '99 Carrera 2 996 for way cheap and in my budget. I think I'll possibly go take a peek at it this weekend. I'm curious though as to how well this car will serve as a DD? Granted, I live up north in Canada, so during the winter we do see some snow. If I put on a good set of winter tires, will this car survive the outdoors? Has anyone else ever driven theirs during the winter?

    Thanks for the feedback :)

A "way cheap" 911 will almost certainly turn out to be anything but...

as for driving in the snow, I drove my 997 C2S in light snow several times and it was fine. I did have a set of all-season tires but they were not true snow tires (i.e. all-season Potenzas, not Blizzaks).

Simon, I definitely am aware of the possibilities and concerns regarding a cheap car. I was just a little surprised as I have not seen a 996 like this be put up for sale for only $20k CDN.

If everyone says it can be used as a DD and driven in the winter time, then I will be very cautious and take due diligence in scoping this car out, doing my homework and having a very thorough PPI. IF, it all checks out, then I probably will purchase it.

I checked CL and think I found the car... Arena Red Aero Kit car?

Looks clean. $20k is definitely the going rate for a 160k (100k mile) car, even in Canada.

I've used 911s as winter DDs for 6 seasons and I can tell you, with the proper tires, you will have no problem. The biggest concern is usually a lack of clearance (especially with the Aero Kit front lip), but I don't think that's an issue for you in Vancouver.

Is there any accident history? I've never seen the 4S/Turbo rear slats on the bumper of a regular 996...

Yeah, that's the car. Although the mileage is a bit high, with proper maintenance and such I think it would be good for quite some time still.

As for accident history, I'm not entirely sure. I plan on going down to look at it closer over the weekend, get all the info on it and see if it's in good shape or not.

Are they expensive to fix? I'm hearing conflicting stories from different sides. All in all, sounds like I will be able to get away with using it in the winter, which is nice

I'm just south of you, across the border. I have been using my 99 996 as an all year DD, including ski trips to the Cascades. It has 120K miles. I think these cars are a great value in its current pricing versus performance/comfort. I just put in Nokian all-weather tires (WRG2), which I also had in an 86 Carrera prior to this 996. The mileage doesn't bother me; just check its condition and buy at an appropriate price...

I'm guessing repair costs are 'expensive' compared to some other brands, but 'cheap' compared to older P-cars.

'Excellence', I think, is going to do an article re winter driving of P-cars....looks like there are some candidates here to be contacted for the story!

Good to hear that it can be used 24/7 in all seasons. That's what I like. Am going down to the dealer tomorrow to check it out and see what's up. Thanks for all the info.

Will do. I am not one to shy away from cars that have been in some accidents before. As long as everything is repaired 100% fully, then why not? I plan on driving it a lot. Every car needs a home, regardless :)

I have bought a few cars that have been in accidents before, and not a single problem.. yet...

I agree Niklas. This car is definetly a driver...and a great looking one at that. I am not worried about claims either at this point. Just want to make sure that you are not getting two cars in one, or that it went for a swim, or had lot's of "roof time" ;)

Well, I just went down there to look at it, but unfortunately I am too late. The car sold yesterday afternoon :(

I didn't think it would last at that price. Oh well. Will keep my eyes open for another

Well, just got a phone call from that same dealer who was selling the 996. It was the sales manager informing me that they are in the process of bringing in a similar car. He said he will give me a call when it arrives. I guess I'm first in line this time :)

We'll see how things go this time around...
