Can you do 'track days' in an small displacement open wheel formula car or something like a D sports Racer?

Anywhere to race them other than SCCA?
(I did not see a class for them on the NASA site)

Best place to ask, if you haven't already, is here:

    http://www.apexspeed.com/forums/

I've relied on track rentals for non-SCCA testing -especially for something as fast as a DSR, where you really can't get anything done if there are too many slower cars on track.

If you are considering the purchase of an open cockpit car, then you may want to look for one that is eligible both in SCCA and in another series, to increase your driving opportunities. The problem is finding a car that is competitive in two series - tough to do.

    Thanks for the links.
I also found the dsr forum for more information.

NJMSP offers track time for their members, which includes time for Sports racers and an open wheel time slot.

Yep, the Drivers Club is really fun!

You drove NSU TT's? They're pretty good small bore race cars. ;)

Holy cow, you know what a NSU is?
The one that I had was a D Sedan, "converted" back into street trim.
    (the lights and wipers worked)

The only racing I did with that one was through the Watchung Reservation.

Can you run an Open wheel car (like a Formula Ford) at your track days?

The Toyota WSR (World Sports Racer) was built for a pro series about ten or twelve years ago. It's a closed-wheel car.

HSR, of all the organizations, offers the least opening for open-wheel (Formula) cars. The Sebring weekend did not have a class for those cars. HSR does offer infrequent opportunities for "BOSS" (Big Old Single Seater) cars at the Mitty and their larger events. Pretty serious racing as John Burke will tell you!

For a track "day," you'll need to find a private organization or motorsports country club that offers a place for open-wheel cars specifically, as most organizers (perhaps even Feffman, who runs good events) have a policy against combining other than purpose-built sports racers with any open wheel cars.

Oddly enough, the reason why SCCA quit mixing open wheel with GT and sedan cars was due to an accident here at VIR in the mid-Sixties, documented on www.virhistory.com, where a small formula car was hit by a Corvette in the Flat Esses (The Snake) with bad results...

If you get a license from one of the racing organizations you can attend the open practice days for a fee at most tracks the day before an SCCA race. The have open and closed wheel groups.

Summit Point must have at least 8 or 9 days a year on the schedule for open practice plus they have other days as well. Just call the track you want to go to and ask and I'm sure they will have something?

I think the OP is looking for non-competition track days.

SCCA Test Days require a license and are definitely not for the feint of heart and I don't think Summit's FATT (Friday at the Track) has an open-wheel group.
