I bought a brand new Sandman back in '77 for circa $6,800. 4.2 litre V8 engine.

Wish I had kept it. Sold it in '80 to buy a Jag (DUH - dumb move).

    I KNEW something was weird!!

THE Bathurst 1000 became the race that delayed a nation after Channel 7 put the advertising dollar before its audience.
Channel 7's "live" coverage of Bathurst was so significantly delayed that, despite the race finishing at 4.53pm, they were still racing until 5.20pm.
Angry motor racing fans bombarded social media sites to blast Seven's coverage.
The network's coverage of Bathurst started out live, but Seven paused and restarted the action to suit its ad breaks.
Normally advertising is slotted in to lulls in the action to prevent delays, but this year Seven struggled to find space.
While Seven blamed the lack of a need for safety cars, fans on Twitter pointed the finger back at the network for overcommitting itself with advertisers.
"Any chance you can sell the TV rights to someone else? Ch7 is pathetic," BigAlRoss tweeted on the V8 Supercars page.
A Seven spokesman said the delay was necessary to avoid missing any race action.

"The closeness of the race, the reduced number of safety cars, advertising commitments and our desire that viewers not miss a single moment of the race led us to time-shift our coverage," the spokesman said.
"Our objective was viewers not miss a moment of action."
When safety cars slow down the racing, it gives the network the opportunity to show ads.
Making matters worse, the delay meant motor sport fans were forced to choose between watching the end of Bathurst or the start of the Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix on Channel 10's dedicated sports channel, One HD.
"Currently enjoying live F1 action from Japanese GP while Ch7 stuff viewers around. Unfathomable FAIL Bathurst," viewer Limatron tweeted.

Interesting. I wondered why my father in NZ was 10 laps ahead of me ... and yes I choose to watch the F1 over the end of Bathurst which was a pity because it was an exciting finish.

I was watching live timing...but der, dumb me...it still didn't click!

i still think seven does the best car racing telelcast with bathurst of any race i've ever seen.

i watched F1 delayed, but by the time I skipped the ads, I'd pretty much caught up to live.

but still...very odd thing for seven to have done.

    Hey Mr Dee Jay....
Last year #7 got smashed in the press about missing the "big incidents" when on what seemed like impossibly long ad breaks.

So this year, they added the ad breaks to the telecast time, instead of forming part of it. The logical plan should have been to edit out the boring bits, but obviously they never found any?

The on-circuit teev output was in tune with live timing out of Natsoft... so it was the home viewers who missed out... or not depending how you look at it

A good race to view anyway!!

    Throughout the race the adds comment was being thrown about,so we timed it several times;
    4 minutes of racing 4 minutes,continually through the event,disgraceful!

    It's a Sandman alright.

That pic was taken after I added Aunger mag wheels., lowered the front end and fitted a holly carb and twin exhaust, full piece chrome HJ rear bumper, Statesman front bumper, front centre aerial, chrome petrol spill cap extension, etc, etc.

I ordered the chrome side kick plate strips and Statesman de Ville grille new. The paint is original Deauville blue GMH paint. I didn't want the side stripes or rear 'Sandman' sticker. But it's still a Sandman.

Here's a pic of the car when new, pre-lowering and with the original wheels - taken in Canberra.

That was a first for me. The first time I've missed the race completely.
Dad probably rolled over in his grave but there was just no interest for me at all, any more.
