Just curious what the general consensus is on booing your own team, whether it be for a bad play call or horrible execution of a play. I feel like if you refrain from booing, it's pretty similar to making sure last place gets a trophy for something. It doesn't do much good to seemingly ignore an obvious error.
For example, our punter kicked a piece of crap that netted us a whopping 12 yards. I booed and the guys in front of me basically crucified me for it. They then go on to make complete jackasses of themselves for the remainder of the game yelling at the refs, the opposing team, and their coaches. Everyone around us thought their behavior was sadly comical.
Later on in the game there was another poorly executed play where a good chunk of the stadium booed and not a peep came from these guys.
I might have been in error booing the punter but his muffed punts are an all too common experience and he just has not been very good this season. I guess I just have a low tolerance for sustained mediocrity.

Oh, hell yeah. Your "boo" was to convey message to punt the punter.

While Fan is short for Fanatic, some knuckleheads like those with whom you became all too familiar live in a Fantastic Fantasy world where their team can do no wrong. Reality is, they're doing their team no favors while spelling out M-E-D-I-O-C-R-E.

Good to know I'm not alone.
Funny thing as I was watching the 49ers vs. Eagles game and the 49ers fans booed their team after every play on one particularly bad drive. Probably helped a bit because Alex smith had a perfect drive next go around and they scored.

The '9ers are my team and I was definitely "upset" at the booing he received. Incidentally, the booing wasn't directed at the team, but rather Alex personally. ["We want Carr, we want Carr!" can't do anyone any good.....]

The SF Giants are another, and the fans seemed to take great delight in booing Zito when he first joined the team - He was crap though! - And he can always console himself with the $12MM (?) he makes every year.... But, it still seems wrong to me.

To answer the Q, my feelings are basically you shouldn't do it - The guy's obviously struggling, but at least he's our guy! We should try and encourage him, not get him down even more - You've gotta support your team thru good and bad IMO.

Having said that, Alex himself admitted after the game that he would have booed himself had it been possible.....

    Cheers,
    Ian

I hope that Philadelphia's booing fans are not contagious and rubbing off on other teams. Seriously, it's so bad, between the negativity, hostility and foul language, that I really don't feel comfortable bringing my kids to any Eagle's home games. There's nothing positive for my kids to experience there IMHO.

I was going to make a comment about "Philly fan".

Wasn't there a guy at a Phillies game that purposely threw up on a little girl after the dad told the guy and his buddy to calm down with the language? The girls dad was a cop to top it off.

I was thinking exactly of this example. I watched this game and am not a fan of either team but wanted SF to win. They were making great progress until Smith made a bone head move and fumbled. His next drive was a bad one too. I guess the the crowd and the thought of getting benched got to him because the following drive was perfect and he scored. Next drive was great too until he threw a interception and ended there chances of winning.

I'm for booing your team if they suck... I'm a Redskins fan and it's been disappointment after disappoinment. This year is looking ok so far..

    I don't.

But I suppose with the prices that the schools or teams charge us, some people may feel that they are not getting their money's worth and they vent with booing.

Personally, I think it is worse to boo the OTHER team.

+1 As I said above, "we" may suck, but as a fan you've gotta stick with your guys/gals!

Oh no! The bad guys are fair game! :) That's why we're called the "12th man".....

Seriously, simple booing isn't terribly imaginative - You gotta try and get under their skin, rattle 'em!.... I'm out of touch, but some of the songs soccer fans invent to "dig" at the bad guys (typically one individual) are *hilarious*.... I'll see if I can find any that are "suitable" for posting.

    Cheers,
    Ian

I agree, I stick with my home team no matter what...but it can get frustrating sometimes. I don't see anything wrong with a little tough love especially if they are getting paid. They're getting paid to perform well.

Or in the case of college football, they are getting really good scholarships in the hopes that they will perform well.

    Absolutely +1

Actually, we did "boo" my Sharks - But, it was a pre-season game and their power play *sucked* - So a few (not many) took to booing 'em after yet another failure - BUT, it was a pre-season game - During the real season you've gotta try and give 'em a lift in the same situation, no matter how much they're struggling (IMO).

    I think a lot of that "tough love" through comes from *silencing* the home crowd though - The away guys will then start;

    You're not signing,
    You're not singing,
    You're not singing anymore!

Great stuff, and no booing involved.....

    Cheers,
    Ian

I don't do it often but I will let my own team have it on certain occasions. Like a QB throwing into quintuple coverage.

Yelling and screaming @ people in sports contests is as useful as screaming at the Blue Angels during a flyby.

I have found no one in sports competition that is worth the money they are getting. Not a single one. Sorry, I don't care how well someone can throw a ball or hit one with a stick, there's no room for these children to get paid $30,$40,$50 million per year.

There are few people that ARE worth 30 million per year. NONE of them play sports.

    Example:
If you're laying on a gurney, bleeding, the doctor working on you is worth every fricken penny on $30 million. Not a tall man the throws a ball thru a ring...

Maybe I just miss the $4 tix to the Padre games. (Too bad parking is $30...)

I have been a 49ers fan since I was 7. I never remember them getting booed in Candlestick like that. Ever. Obviously a lot of frustration coming out. Chanting for Carr is silly though. He really sucks!! They need to get it together..fast.

If I made a bad play and nobody booed, I would be inclined to think my crap play was acceptable because nobody noticed, nobody cared.

If Smith gets yanked and Carr was to go in and do well, that may be the end of Smith's career. Am I kidding? Evidence: Leinert, Merriman, Antonio Bryant, Marvin Harrison and any other athlete that has been replaced. The NFL has a draft every year, do you wonder where the guys go that the drafted kids replaced? Does Brady Quinn have a future in the NFL?

As far as Zito consoling himself with millions, damned right, I would - and so would you.

Now, the one thing I don't like is members of the press cheering or booing something while in the press box or on the sidelines.

At this point I wouldn't say Carr is worse than Smith. I would say you're not likely to do any worse by yanking Smith and playing Carr.

Why would you say Carr really sucks?

Has he ever played much time on a team where he was not running for his life?
I'm surprised he has not been concussed for life, at this point.

I've booed my team once, three weeks ago when we dropped the game to UCLA and the offensive coordinator kept calling 3 yard loss screen plays when we were down by 14 points. The last three and out was too much to take and I was not the only person booing.
