I drove my car to cars and coffee on Saturday. 150 miles and the car ran great! What a different feeling than the 246. I'm trying to fix a few basic things right now. The shift knob is original and I understand impossible to find. Mine has a huge chunk missing from the bottom. Any ideas on repair. I know G. Blue made some replicas in the past but doesn't have any more.

That looks like cured epoxy colored with black pigment, you should be able to create a mold and cast a new one if you can source a similar nut. Does not look too difficult to reproduce the top inlay, looks like a clear layer of epoxy on top of a black layer which was engraved and had white paint applied.

    Jon,
Perhaps check with one of the folks who offers vintage 'plastic' steering wheel restoration. I imagine that your shift knob could be fairly easily repaired...keepin' it original. Here are a couple of shops; I don't know anything about their work, but it's a start. (There are likely others, too.)
Not far from you, in Poway.

And, since I know you're a DIY guy, Eastwood has a kit that you might consider.

    Good Luck,

The problem with a repair is that old cured epoxy becomes very brittle, like glass. Chances are high that the lower part breaks again at another place due to the nut pushing against it when switching gears.

The 275 shift knob is almost identical I believe, minus the shift pattern map and see-through cap. Here's someone selling repros so perhaps you can buy one, hollow it out and use your insert to finish it off.

Okay Tom, good idea. How can I help you to move it to the top of the list.

I like this idea best. Now who can get my old shift pattern out and fitted to a new one?

    Jon,

I would not attempt to take the knob apart for fear of damaging it. It would be difficult to replace. Use it as a pattern to mold/digitize. Instead I would shop around some model makers such as Luna Design in San Clemente (owner is Sergio) or perhaps Metalcrafters in Fountain Valley. There is also a modelmaker in the Detroit area named Mike Swanson who made the replica Parachute seatbelt covers and replica Hella signal lenses. He used to work for me. I'm away on business right now but will PM you his contact when I get it.
