Is this Tony from Ottawa, Canada? Hmmm. I guess my car wasn't the only one he was "serious" about, heh. After reading this and a few other posts I'm guessing it will be a while before he actually gets one.

Ebay worked for me. Listed twice, never met reserve but the 2nd go-round I got an actual buyer from the Pac NW that made a realistic offer. He's driving it home Friday with his son.

Don't worry Dave, you'll see me around. I've already got my exotic European vehicle replacement. Its an early 1979 hybrid with gas/human dual power. I think I'll shuttle it over to see Roberto at FoS right now to check out an '09 Carrera Turbo. Srsly :)

Oh I hope you don't mind. You were the "355 guru" I referred to in my auctions.

Let me put my 2cents in on eBay. I used to sell on eBay back when it was a good place to be. Buyers and sellers both had expectations of one another and eBay made certain everyone followed the rules. I started in 2000 and 2007 thru summer 2008 were my best times. There were months I cleared $50K or more, and then it all came crashing down.

eBay has outlived it's usefulness IMO. Those IT's that worked there getting it started and all the worms worked out should've had their contracts terminated years ago. Instead they had to justify their positions by changing everything around and getting the "RULES" modified to the point things you've been doing are all of a sudden in violation of eBay policies. No warnings, they just cancel and delete your auctions and make you go to eBay school for a tutorial on following the rules!

Plus EVERYTHING is fudged up on there from the standpoint of being a seller. If you sell, be prepared to be screwed as often as your potential buyer wants to screw you. eBay & Paypal used to handle their DISPUTE RESOLUTIONS DEPARTMENT with a bit more professional poise, but not any more. Someone enters a dispute for absolutely ANYTHING and they get their money back. It's as simple as that. You the seller lose!

I sold an 18kt Rolex President with factory diamond dial and bezel with original band (1995). Band was tight, sapphire crystal was clean & clear, kept perfect time. Guy buys it for a steal $8500. I FedEX the watch to him...A dealer/reseller I might add, and he gets the watch next day. He emails me with concerns and I immediately call him. He says well I think the band might be counterfeit. It has all the proper markings but theres just something suspicious about it. Tries to get me to come off $1500 on the price! I told him HELL NO! Send it back and I'll give you your money back. He convinces me to refund him $500 so I did. Two weeks later the SOB opens up a F-ing dispute against me saying the watch wasn't real gold! Paypal locks out the account with nearly $10K tied up in there and starts demanding evidence. I provide them with serial #'s, receipt where I originally bought the watch, put them in touch with the jewelers I got it from, and jumped thru every hoop they demanded of me. After nearly two months they shut down my account, told me for all they know I could have sent him a fake and just took pictures of my real one...they don't know. He keeps my watch and they wouldn't release my money!

So a watch dealer isn't so sure about my band being genuine and wants $1500 settles for $500 and takes him two weeks to determine I sold him a fake Rolex/ fake gold? BS and I hate eBay/Paypal for that and a hundred other reasons!

That is too funny. We have the exact same moped at our lake home in Mn. My Aunt used it in college. My favorite part is the duck horn, it's intensity is directly proportional to engine RPM. Hilarious!

See, this kind of thinking is what I don't understand. It's 1 thing to say "I'm willing to pay up to $46K." It's a different thing to say "I only have $46K available." If your friend only has $46K, how does he expect to get the car serviced? Has he put aside a cost-per-mile reserve for unexpected repairs?

If he has $46K to spend on a 355, then he really should have at least another $15K in reserve for a couple of years' operating and repair costs. And if he already has $15K in reserve, then why not offer an extra $X to get a nice car like this one?

Here's a real world example: I just bought my car 2 weeks ago and it is getting the 30K major done right now. The engine is now out of the car. The shop reported that both manifolds are showing eminent signs of failure. So, the price of the 30K just jump up by $3K in a heartbeat. If you're not prepared for stuff like that, your ownership experience is not going to be pleasant.

You get $crewed being a buyer or a seller if the other person is dishonest. And sometimes ebay / paypal just $crews you for the hell of it.

I stop doing business with paypal, buying or selling. No more! I am happy without paypal. I will do business in cash, personal check, money order, cashier check, bank transfer, or live chickens. but, never will do paypal.

+100-------That is the problem with 90% of "buyers" out there---They have no idea what it cost to service these cars. My mechanic tells me he has seen the same cars being flipped around because people buy them and realize they cant afford to fix them, sell the car and the cycle continues....

Holy crap, not to go too far off topic here, but if paypal withheld your money, would they then return it to the purchaser? In that case would you not be entitled to your goods back?

Seems like a strange system to they uninitiated.

Yes i had the same problem earlier this year. Sold some scum bag a ferrari car cover in Italy. Sent it of the next day, 3 days later he lodges a complaint/dispute that he has not reserved the cover (i am in the UK so 3 days is far to early). Over a week later he says he still has not had it, then my paypal account is suspended/froze:( I sent of all the usual proof of posting along with pictures of the item warped up with the guys address on (i do this with all my sales just in case). I also jumped through all the hoops paypal wanted me to do. After 4 weeks they still found in his favor WTF!! The cash was returned to him and i was ripped of.
Contacting the shipping company they came back to me 3 weeks later saying they had delivered it. I contacted the tosser in Italy and emailed the letter from the shipping company. I got really pissed of with him and told him i was sending a friend who also lived in Italy around to see him. Low and behold the tosser simply puts the cash back into my account without any explanation.
Now, i never ever ship outside the UK, and i hate paypal with a passion as well as ebay. i would never trust them again....ever:(

But as a seller, that really isn't your responsibility. If a guy only has $46k to spend and gives you every penny, seller should just be happy to get the money. If the new owner wants to service the car, or paint it in John Deere colors with pink flags hanging out of the windows, that is his business.

Back to the Barchetta Red 355, one thing I have never understood about dealerships, especially ones like where you bought that also service Ferraris, why don't they do the major before selling? IIRC the asking price was $35k on that car, by the time you get it back you will have another $10k into it, without getting personal I will assume this means a $45k-ish amount of money in the car before you even park it in your garage. Option 2 would be for the dealership to have performed the major and fixed the intake, and all they have in it is their dealership cost of parts and what they pay the technician, a fraction of what the customer pays. Maybe they have an additional $5k instead of $10k.

So what would a fully serviced 355 be worth? More than $40k I would assume which is their cost. It seems like they would be money ahead to do the work before ever putting it up for sale. Someone could have easily bought the car, drove it off, and they wouldn't have gotten the service work.

It doesn't make any sense to me.

True in one sense...but as a seller, you should recognize this as a negotiation tactic when it is deployed skillfully. I just went through this selling my M3. Example from earlier this week: Buyer contacts me and says: "I only have $15,000. What's your bottom line price?" This was his ploy to get me to lower the asking price without actually entering into negotiation.

My response was, "If you only have $15,000 and the ad says $18,500, you're going to need to raise some more money."

Yah, supposedly but this has happened to me before in the past on a much less valuable item. I don't know how they get around it, but I didn't pursue it too hard. The end result would've been a china/fake Rolex returned and once again "my word against his". Since he's the accuser, BLAH.

Not quite sure what I'm going to do about it, but I'm checking into some sort of legal action against the guy.

    Mi take on Robbie car,

Great car from a car guy who cares ...nothing with eBay its just another avenue to advertise.

I think the black wheels are a turn off I think if they were factory color it would have sold.plus the potential problems. That scares many buyers

I don't think the color of the wheels would make or break a "true" buyer. Most know the wheel color can be changed back for a minimum of expense. I would even pay to have them painted back if that is what it took to make a deal work. What potential problems are you referring to?
