It's very egotistical and presumptuous for Alonso to say this.

Even if Felipe has no desire to see Alonso win the WDC this year, the best performance for himself possible is entirely in his best interests. It increases or maintains his market value. It gives the team more WCC money - and a richer team is a richer employer. It may raise him in the standings and add to his legacy.

Felipe has no reason to do anything other than the best he can.

For Alonso to publicly say what he did is obviously a euphimism for "hey Felipe, get with the program will you? I need my b*tch to be out there helping me win!".

It's insulting to Felipe and just rubbing salt in the wounds. Partly the presumption that Felipes role is to support Alonso, and partly the presumption that he wouldn't have been doing his best until now.

    Very arrogant of Alonso.

I am sure Massa will do his best, and next year he should be MORE arrogant and selfish than Alonso was to him this year.

In the history of everything, has any good ever come from an athlete speaking to the press?

    Ouch!

I heard from a very good authority (a New York Jet) that the Tom Brady Randy Moss scuffle never happened. The guys were joking around, that's all. Press blew that one.

IMHO, Massa should help out Alonso this year. It's his job. Alonso drove better, and qualified better this season.

But next season, Massa needs to step up his game. Every season, it's the same song he sings. He's not no 2, he's prepared for the WDC, bla bla...

Next season, he needs to put those words into action. I'm not saying winning every race, but baby steps like outqualifying Alonso, and also not playing Mr. Nice Guy to Alonso. I absolutely loved it when Massa didn't give an inch to Alonso back in Barca 2007, and also his wheel to wheel banging at the Nurburgring. Thats the Massa we need to see. Not someone who issues a sissy statement to the press after Alonso took a cheap shot at China this year.

With Alonso smoking him as badly as he is, Massa might be being arrogant/selfish in a Renault or something next year...

Massa's ride for next year will depend on his performance in the next races.
The spring-to-the-helmet accident recovery time excuss has run its course.
His absolute crap qualifying and race results have got to improve and he HAS to qualify within .1 of Alonso to keep his ride.

All F1 drivers are good no doubt about that, but last year Kimi issue's either lack of motivation or car feeling made Massa look better than he really is ... Reality check now say what you say about FA but he is smoking him consistently and the points he lost in that early race( Australia ??) where Felipe wouldn't let him pass and WAS slower might be crucial now.

No, he has a contract for next year with Ferrari. He will definitely be with Ferrari next year.

Who else are they going to get?

Ferrari is strange with their #2 drivers. They want someone fast, who is willing to be a #2. Those drivers don't exist. I am not a huge Massa fan, but who would be a better #2 than him?

Alonso smoking Massa makes Kimi look *really* bad. Really REALLY bad.

More of a washed up has-been than he looked before.

Aw cmon, not THAT bad. You are forgetting that he almost won the WDC in 2008. He missed half of last season due to the spring incident. Too bad the last restore point the doctors could find was from 2005.

You have that much faith in a Ferrari contract? If they want him gone they'll pay and he'll be gone.

Seems that way, it really is a tricky one, but IMO wherever Alonso drives that has to be the case.

I think Massa must have known this from the get go.

    6 years ago maybe.

    :D

Odd flashes of brilliance (like Massa). Complete and utter prick though. He'd fit in perfectly next to Alonso then.

He isn't that bad which was evidenced by his victories and fastest laps. But that "almost WDC" was more of a courtesy of the FIA than his talents.

It's funny: The way you see Alonso is the exact opposite of how I view him but precisely how I look at MS.

No on the question and totally agree with the statement that follows it.

    But,

I don't think Ferrari have access to anyone better right now. Ferrari wants a fast and very good driver, and they want him to be Alonso's backup. What driver, that is better than Massa, would take the job? I can't think of someone who is definitely a better driver who would be willing to take the 2nd Ferrari seat. There are some unproven guys like Sutil who would love it, but it would probably end badly in 2 more years.
