I wanted to note a curious thing about FerrariChat. I browse through the several boards that constitute the Forum (including occasionally the "Pretty Girls" thread, I must confess) and conclude that Ferrari owners now comprise an incredibly varied cross section of the population, some of whom seem only mildly interested in the cars!

What a comfort it is to me to return to the 206/246 board. I thought perhaps that might relate to the fact that, possibly, we are really not "Ferrari owners" (!). Or perhaps because 206/246 owners are impecunious (like me) relative to new breed, although that obviously does not apply to many on the 206/246 board. The "Vintage" board to me offers the same breath of fresh air, and the discussions there, as here, are comfortable and pleasant reading to me. Most likely, it is perhaps a question of age, but, again, that is just me, as I know some of you are quite young.

I would have thought there would be a strong common thread among Ferrari enthusiasts. I find a strong one exists among Lotus enthusiasts; for one, they are all slightly crazy (in a good way). But there seems to be sharp divides in the population that occupies FerrariChat. I wonder why that is so.

I'm not provoking a discussion, but just wanted to note my own puzzlement here and that I am glad you are all on this board.

    Regards,

    Andres

I believe that most in the Dino section can do a lot of the work that keeps these cars on the road themselves, you can have a go at most things and if you get stuck there is usually somebody who can help you out.The more later the model the more complicated they get so you have to rely on a pro to fix the problem,I reckon plenty of people in this section do their own services I wonder how many do their own on the later models?

In his memoirs My Terrible Joys, Enzo took notice and described the 3 types of Ferrari owners. Synopsis below from memory:

    a) Competition Enthusiast - True car guys and seek to know everything about every car, perhaps more money than talent but always seeking next level, including buying race cars.

    b) Gentleman Driver - Successful business owner, mid 50's in age, loves Ferrari for exclusivity, has passion for brand.

    c) Playboy - All about the flash, usually has girl hanging on arm when touring factory (distracting factory workers). Passion and knowledge about Ferrari extends only exterior and interior color options.

I lurk two boards mainly: Vintage and Dino. And the curious thing is I don't have a Dino, nor plan on having one. But I do find likely-minded people here.

I have two Dinos, but normally frequent only the Vintage and Dino boards, as well. Maybe that's because, no matter the current product mix or the fortunes of the F1 time, I tend to believe that the best of Ferrari is in the rear view mirror. I'd take a 250 GTO to the Enzo replacement, I wouldn't trade a Dino for any new Ferrari, etc. Then again, maybe, at age 62.6, I've just become a codger! Fred

The cars have character, if having flaws is the price for character then I'll take the flaws. That is probably why people of different backgrounds find a commonality here.
Or perhaps we know these cars from a time when cars could move people.
I am awed by the latest cars and their prestigious specifications but not drawn to inexorably towards them.

There is nothing that can replace history/folklore/fun....

I remember when I first got my Dino GTS...at a Ferrari Club event in 2001, the 355 guys were turning their noses at the car....afterall, it wasn't a "REAL" Ferrari and 360's were still trading at well above sticker (even Euro cars)...

I would be willing to venture that ALL of those 355 guys that still have their cars would be MORE than willing to trade their 355 for any Dino.....

I think time has told the legend of the Dino....I fell in love with them when they were a "Girl's Ferrari"..... and that was after they were "Almost a Ferrari"...

They have come full circle to "Almost a Ferrari" again, but interestingly enough, I still stand behind the fact that most "Ferrari" owners with newer, more user friendly Ferrari's would trade their cars for something that was ALMOST, but not quite, a Ferrari

    :)

(As a side note, I ALMOST traded my 87 Testarossa in 1999 for a Dino GTS + CASH, I hesitated.... If anyone has even a lowly Dino GT, I will trade my Testarossa for it and forget that pesky cash....who needs the tax problems?)

    BMW 2002tii:BMW e36 M3 :: Dino GTS:F355 GTS

    Does that work?

I love all 4 cars above (owned 2 of them) with hopes to have the other 2 someday. FWIW though, I wouldn't trade my F355 for anything.

Sorry for the thread hijack. :)

Perhaps not, TX246. The Dino doesn't have the flash that will attract the girls, can't take the 17" chrome wheels needed for the purpose, will need to be smothered with Ferrari emblems, and, if it came in any other color, would have to painted red. And there can be no fumbling with the query "is it a Ferrari?"

Seriously, it's just not the cars that are different; the people, culture seem very different, even the talk, and the underlying values. A bit disconcerting for me, actually, but that's a function of my age probably (we're the same age, Fred).

Who actually says "impecunious"? Meaning: hard up: not having enough money to pay for necessities

Yeah, I had to look it up.

Wow, so insults and stereotyping are what make your 'planet' special? What value are you exhibiting in this post?

I invite you to peruse the 348/355 forum and look for the thread on the recent SoCal get together (hint: it has like 14,000 views) and then re-evaluate. While you're there, check out my F355 University thread. That different, really?

Can't we all just get along?

You are right, Sandy. I didn't mean to insult or stereotype, but that is what I sounded like. I was reacting badly to a thread in the general forums, which I thought was deteriorating badly. (I didn't like the way the women subject of the posts were being discussed, but that is I realize just a personal attitude peculiar to me and my age). The model-specific threads, such as the 348/355's, are enthusiast oriented and exactly on the right track, I feel. I should not have posted this thread, and I regret doing so.

Please accept my apologies for any slight.

    Regards,

    Andres

I can't make a comment about some of the discussion on the "pretty girls" thread because I haven't had time to really read it. I would remind you, however, that heterosexual males have been obsessive "enthusiasts" for the female form for thousands of years before Ferraris came along. This "enthusiasm" may be the only reason our species is still here. Just a thought.

Maybe love of a certain automobile is in large measure a function of age. I was 17 when the 1965 Dino 206 Berlinetta Speciale was introduced, and wanted a Dino from the moment I heard that it would be produced. Having now been a Dino owner for almost 35 years, my affection has only increased. The Dino (my own two Dinos, and the model in general) and I have "matured" together, and the fact of the long infatuation, coupled with long-time ownership, has created a bond that no newer Ferrari model, much less the "next big thing" from Ferrari, whatever that may be, could ever supersede. I would crudely analogize my "relationship" with Dinos to a long-standing friendship or even a long-term marriage. What I loved about the Dino from the start has been augmented by years of ownership. Just as a long-married man may admire a beautiful young woman, she could never supplant the love for his wife. In that regard, I am automotively monogamous, if such a concept is possible. Having spouted all of this armchair sociology, can anyone think of another car that could generate such loyalty, admiration and affection? The damned things are practically alive! Fred

    Oh yes. Yes.

    Well written 2GT!

And you can push your excellent analogy much further... Respect for both my Dino and my Lady prevents me from telling you how far.

    Correctamundo!
But aphrodisiacs are always welcome to the party and of course Ferraris can help fill that role. Especially the Dino. I do not know of any a car that can turn a woman on like a Dino. From the passenger seat she can see the same cusrves you can, now ask her if she would like to change gear while your press the clutch and match the revs. Its a great ice breaker at any age
