Lower tech, but I remember as a kid seeing a model rocket that you could fit a small camera in. Fire the rocket and it'd take a few snaps of the view at the top of its flight. Cool stuff

Any way you slice it, great stuff.

As an aside, does anyone else remember their fathers playing more with the rockets than them?

That is a pretty cool project. I wonder if the FAA will contact the launch team?

Did the author of the Huffington article not actually watch the video, or his he just a lousy reporter? The iPhone did not record the video. The external led light was not from the iPhone. Man, reporters suck a lot of the time.

Nor was the IPhone exposed to 100 mph winds and -60 degree temperatures - it was inside the insulated container.

The whole thing has been twisted to be "look how great the Iphone is" at many sites because people do not pay attention to what is really happening.

Cool but over hyped. The fish-eye lens gave the illusion of actually being in space.

You can tell the lens was doing that because you could see the "earth's curvature" at 30k feet, which is not possible. Space doesn't happen technically til 100 km (62 miles)...not 100k ft (20 miles).

It's still pretty dang cool.... I don't think anyone at F-Chat has launched anything
that went 20 miles high... and came back with video to prove it.

Cool thread. Hard to believe the kid launched only one less vehicle than the USA has remaining. True, the kid's wasn't manned but you know he had a lizard on it.

There is an FAA exemption based on weight-- I think if it's less than 4 pounds, it's exempt.

Some students at MIT did this a long time ago, and published instructions:
