I think that what slowed down production is the California; Ferrari is trying to figure out how to sell the California after they launch the 458 Spider.

Totatly false. The dealers have people lined up in groves waiting for the 458 spider. They wish they had them now.

It's a different car for different people. The California is more of a MB SL competitor. The 458 spyder is a flat out sports car so I don't think one will take sales from the other too much. I don't know about ordering one in Tenn. though. If your friend has ordered it and put down the 30k then he's being ripped off. You can NOT put an order into the system yet because it doesn't exist and there's actually no number for it yet. If he did then the dealer is just holding his money which is something you probably don't want to have happen.

Let's hope it doesn't look like the the picture above. A glass roof would be nice.

With all due respect you don't seem to have a clue how Ferrari orders work...

I have bought 8 new Ferrari's over the last 14 years.
    I gave my dealer a 20k deposit for a spyder 6 months
ago and will NOT be getting the car for another year

I think every dealer operates a bit different. I asked mine if I could put money down and he said no. He did the same with my last purchase -- not taking any money until he had a slot for me to order a car even though I offered.

He knows I want a spider. But, my getting one is probably 2 years away. I can wait -- or maybe I can't! :)

Exactly. At times I have had as many as 5 deposits with my dealer (all on cars that don't yet exist).

As bdelp said,it's different with every dealer.
No deposit until allocation is confirmed and only when I spec the car.

Off topic - if it is a hardtop I am going to sell the 612 at market price and buy a 16M.

If it is soft I will keep the 612 and my next Ferrari is a 458 Spyder.

Until then I will lurk in hopes of reality.

I wish it was a soft top but it's not going to happen, unfortunately.
More and more I hear it will be some sort of hard top although I can not imagine how are they going to squeeze it between the engine bay and the seats.

True it's different at every Dealer. All the previous Ferrari's I got from them never required a deposit.
Now they have gone high and mighty requiring a deposit.
Which tells me they are No longer sure about the strength
of the future market and want to nail down their customers
    to a solid commitment

have you seen the video clips of the concept ferrari with this 'latest top in question'?. it's very trick and simple to see in operation. i suspect the 458 top will be very similar.

Saw a 458 today and thought about the hardtop question. They really have to be clever to fit a hardtop between the seats and engine bay...

Can't wait to the Spyder, it will look so fantastic either way...

If you have a look at their patent it's fairly simple, more like a flip top targa that stores itself vertically thus saving space and being able to fit.

I got rid of my 430S after two years thinking I would get the new 458S while driving my 599. The wait is ridiculous and the way Ferrari conceals any information about the Spyder when the basic car has been on the road almost two years now is causing me to have second thoughts about the whole matter.

Ferrari, with their pompous presentation of the new FF. and secrecy with the new 458 Spyder has me in a bit of a lather.

Imagine what it would be like if the economy was good.

Went through this same abuse in the late 80's with the shortage of cars and game playing with customer lists.

No one to blame but myself.
