I know many of you 550 owners will think this is funny, but I never knew there was a gas cap holder built into the opening gas cover lid on the car.

I always set the Ferrari gas cap on the gas pump when I was putting gas in the car. The other day I was filling up and noticed the metal flaps under the open gas lid and set the gas cap in it and realized I had a built-in cap holder all this time.

I assume this is somewhere in the owner's manual but I guess I must have glossed past that page.

Anyway, here are pictures of the cap holder under the flip-open lid.

Ron- You probably would have realized it sooner if you had a 575. They have a line attached between the cap and the gas filler door hinge. Makes it impossible to put it on top of the pump. You can see it just to the right of the hinge.

Isn't that the truth. I never realized how the rubber gasket was supposed to fit inside the gas tank lid until I saw Ron's pictures of his lid. I just thought mine was replaced at some point by a prior owner who installed the wrong one.

That IS how the rubber gasket should sit isn't it??

    What exactly is it's purpose??

I've assumed it was to prevent spilling drops of gas onto the paintwork.

So, do you place the cap face towards the hinged side of the cover or away. Hmm toilet paper over or under scenario.

In Oregon, self-service isn't even allowed. As Claude Raines says in Casablanca, "I'm shocked, shocked" to discover that there is a gas cap holder on the filler door. Despite the illustration in my manual, my cap doesn't come with a wire fastener and the cap has always been placed on the pump by the attendant.

Mark- The 2000-2003 US 456M OMs I have do not show a cap retainer. I thought perhaps they had added one when 575M production began in 2001/2 so they were the same, but the OMs all show no retainer and so does the parts catalog and WSM. Which manual had that illustration? There are sometimes differences in individual OMs, even though the document numbers are the same, so I was curious. I have 2002 575M OMs 1794/02, some of which have a hill stop paragraph and some of which do not. Here is the 2003 US 456M OM page and the 2002 575M OM page.

Does your gas lid have a gas cap holder? Lots of times (most of the time) they change the car and not the OM.

Bob, Barry- Have to check that. Not sure it will fit with the plug side towards the gas filler door.

I have a pdf of the manual on my office computer and that's what I'm looking at. I'm at the office, fifty miles from home, so I can't go out to the garage and actually take a look at my F-car (we've had a downpour over the past 12 hours, and I'm using my dd today). I think there is a distinct possibility that I don't have a cap holder, but I'll check tonight.

I don't think it will fit that way too, Terry.

Anyway, the techs put the gas cap in the holder at track events. So do I at the pumps. That's an expensive gas cap!

In the 456m, it looks exactly like the oil and coolant caps. I wonder if they're interchangeable.
