Was watching Fox TV last night and a show called "Chasing Classic Cars". Some guy in the US bought a Ferrari Daytona Spyder (forgot which year) which had been stored in the California desert for 30-years and he paid circa US$954K for it, as-was. He was then having it restored. He already owned a Daytona hardtop. Oh to have hard cash.
We both missed it, I think it was sold privately in the last 12 months. Spotted in your suburb a couple of months ago. There are not too many Ferrari related 2 digits around; but that is number one on my list
The guy who ended up with the car was the original owner (maybe 2nd ?) who crashed it in period. It was an insurance write-off at the time. Somebody fixed it, painted it a different colour and it ended up stored for years. Hunted down by the guy in the show who sold it to the Guy who crashed it. He now has the spider and a coupe in the same colour. I read about it ages ago in Sports Car Market magazine. Missed the show; but would like to see it sometime.
I have seen that show before. Some very interesting cars on there, thats for sure. Would have loved to see that episode last night, ill turn on the tv now and see if they are replaying it. Do you know what it changed hands for SD?? Or do you *know* what it would be worth? Or is one of those things where its "only worth what someone is willing to pay" kinda things? To the average punter, #27 is #27. Most wouldnt know the significance that plate is to a Ferrari F1 fan.
No idea what it went for; but it's worth less than it was pre GFC that's for sure. Might be a hard plate to sell for a premium as most current Ferrari owners would have no clue of the significance of '27' in Ferrari history. For everyone else it's just a number without any significance.
The funny thing is is that 27 was my favourite number BEFORE I got interested in Ferrari's at around 10 years old and before learning the significance of the number and Ferrari. Just so happens that's when my car (308) was built. I was bought up around speedway and oval dirt racing and always followed racing cars with number 27 and where ever possible I like to have 27. My Go Kart licence number just happened to be 727. Go figure, didn't even request it. I'll keep my eyes open for 27 in the hood.
I actually wanted BL-27 like another Ferrari owner here in Melbourne who had/has? a yellow 355 challenge with FL-27. BL-27 was no longer a combination allowed at the time I applied hence my car has BTL-27 with the T being my middle name, named after my father Thomas. I would love to buy 27 should the opportunity arise but I'm not too sure if I'll be able to afford it as I believe they are worth around $200-300k or more? Plus I'd be bidding against a friend. lol. You're lucky, I can't find the video clip on that. Must have been a standard 355, but it did have a rear wing. I'll keep trying to remember the name of the owner.
Here you go mate. Don't worry Uncle Pete, you'll get to know all these lines inside out the more time you spend with little 360C watching these. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=naAKgq3YUCs
For any new ferrari owners out there who are lost on the significance of 27: http://www.ferrariownersclub.co.uk/happenings/2004/november/27/report.asp
Watching it now. Owner Herb Chambers bought his car back. Bought it 1 yr old in 1970 something to drive as his daily driver. Eventually had a crash, car was *thought* to be written off. Was or not, dont know. But it was repaired and eventually sat for 30 yrs in the desert. They JUST started it up after 30 yrs, started straight away and it was actually spitting dog food out the back of the pipes. Mice had gotten in the exhaust and were hoarding dog food in there. Car is being fully restored. 8 month reno, everything done. Engine-body, interior etc.etc. Not gunna happen in 8 months apparently. Herb also owns a 1972 Daytona coupe they are showing now. Looks beautiful in gold.
Herb Chambers has a very nice collection of cars, including a McLaren F1. He owns a massive BMW dealer network in the US.
I very much doubt that # 27 will be sold in the $200k's any more. It would be solidly in the $300k's today. Plates like this generally sell on the private market, rarely at auction. That would make a big dent in an F40 budget
have you scene all the plates getting around that letters and numbers, but are on heritage style plates? ie i2i2 or 1212 or 2i2i ie 2121. or iiii 1111
Yeah, it showed him rolling around in his McLaren on the show. Silver one, looks AWESOME! Here is some info on Herbie. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herb_Chambers Has anyone taken note/worked out how much these plates appreciate over time?? Like realestate has an average 10% growth every year, do these plates follow the same trend??
Tactics already hah mate. If I were to get #27 I reckon I'd be the only person in my area without an 8 on my plate.
