if both cars are similar in mileage, condition and price, which car would you buy?

which one is "better" for a person who has never owned a 911 before?

does a GT3 hold value better than a tt?

    thanks.

I would say a GT3 will hold its value better than a Turbo. I am sure fewer GT3 are out there and Turbos will not be as cherished as GT3s as some (maybe most?) will be used a daily drivers by people who aren't really into cars.

I would go for the GT3 but i have driven both and a few other 911. The Turbo is a nice GT but it's not as fun as a GT3. What would be the use of this car for you? I have a 997 C4S and would love a GT3 in place of my C4S but the roads here in Chicago are just terrible that i dont see the point (I use my car everyday.)

it will be my weekend car and occasional drive to work on a good day.

do you have to rev the GT3 hard to get the power out of the car? it's rate 415hp and 299ftlb torque. do you get punch back to the seat when you hit the accelerator? I like the look of the GT3 (I just love 911 with big wing :) ) but not sure if I will be happier with the tt or not.

I started out looking for 993,996 and while I really like the 993tt, I think I would be happier with a more modern interior and comfort of a 997. The 997tt is getting closer to the value of the 993tt, so getting a 997(either tt or GT3) makes more sense for me. the 993tt is very nice though.

    thanks.

Yes, you need to work it harder than the Turbo to get the power but it is very rewarding and fun, esp if you delete the mufflers (The Turbo will never sound as great.). The Gt3 feels much more nimbler than the turbo/C4S and is overall a much more rewarding experience, esp if you will get it as a week end toy.

The 993 Turbo is a gorgeous car (Cant say that about the 997 Turbo, it looks good but not as good as a 993T). I sometimes think about switching to a 993T too..esp now that my warranty is over.

I was driving on highway 52 east (san diego) towards the 805 and as I looked to the right side to change to the inside lane, a 996 turbo was hauling ass(probably close to 100mph as I was driving 75mph) and passed other cars on the inside lanes, and I was surprised how quiet the 996tt was. I barely heard its exhaust sound.

yea imo, the 997, while looks great, it just doesn't have the elegance of the 993tt. I was surprised to see how smaller the 993 cars are compared to the 996 and 997.

gt3 is more hardcore. the tt can be driven more relaxed ...

but don't underestimate the tt, it's an animal too.

i think it boils down to persona ... what YOU feel comfortable with.

997 gt3 is a rougher car, that is incredibly rewarding to a good driver, an absolute terror to a bad driver. It is also very visceral, very mechanical in feel. the turbo is a lot more relaxed, and the soundtrack from the gt3 is beautiful, while the turbo is a bit gt-r ish, a bit too quiet. If you wanted a daily driver, the turbo is better, but on the track the near 400lb weight difference shows. GT3 likes to rev more, down low it doesn't have the turbo punch, but if you want a weekend car the gt3 is so much better. so much. It really isn't funny.

.....I just purchased a 2002 tt and I was worried that it would not be fast enough. What a joke! First car I have owned that is actually scary fast AND it is a daily driver if you so choose. Unreal car......

More stiffly sprung, more involving motor, more responsive to input...

I'm biased as I owned two 996 GT3's. Regardless, for a weekend car I'd take the GT3 over the Turbo all day long.

This is why my cousin sold his GT3. It was too rough for the street for him, he felt like it only belonged on the track.

Personally, I'd opt for the GT3. But then again, I'm OK with internal organ-rearranging suspension settings. I'd think most people (even car people) would prefer the Turbo. Particularly if you've never had a 911 before. GT3 will probably hold its value better, though I don't know if by much.

buy the tt make it RWD never never drive with traction control (my techs can show you how to remove it completely), then you have a fun car. But since no one here is as crazy as I am, I'll give my experince after owning 39 Porsche's but the TT, it is very fast and it will slam you back into the seat, a GT3 will not really do that anywhere near as well. The GT3 has a mch heavier clutch and stuck in traffic it can get old. If your condidering resale value, than buy a used car, new cars not the smart way to go if that is in your mind. The TT is a better road car, and most people like the added safety of the way it is set up.

thank you. i was wondering why there has been so little love for the turbo?

lightly modded, the turbo will rape a gt-3 in virtually any contest. they can be made to push like an f-15!

and if you need sound...a lightly silenced turbo will scream the banshee!!!

Come now. Any contest? Just not true. Its not all about acceleration. And honestly, I have yet to find a twin turbo that can out accelerate my GT3 with me at the helm. My GT3 & I posted an 11.9 at the local drags - and it does this to "lightly modded" turbos at the race track:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzTetlRZRY8

I have no ill feelings for the turbo, but after owning them both, and driving them like they were intended to be, the GT3 is the unadulterated winner.

But if you require that "push in the back F15" thing. Go nuts man. I for one will see you in my mirror.

oh gawd michael, not another challenge thread?

first off, a mildly tuned 997tt will go better than 11.9 in the quarter at a bigger trap speed.

the turbo in the vid is suspended totally stock and soft it would appear...easily and cheaply fixed.

the guy in the tt is clearly not quick ...back in my scca national days, my gt-2 280zx (with a wes moss built 320 hp engine) would run faster laps than gt-1 vettes with gobs more hp.
so i'm not sure of the point you are making in the video?

regarding leaving me for dead, maybe but i have enough seat time in sactioned events on 2 and four wheels at regional, mational, and professional levels. i spent a good many years spending lots of time and never to be recovered dollars looking for the fast way around the track. i was not trying to bench race you but you pushed that one.

how about we just agree that you are a fast guy and i would do my level best to keep you in my sights.

Hey man, if you want the turbo, go get the turbo.

But in the mean time... How about you refrain from the "the turbo will rape a gt-3 in virtually any contest" and read up on virtually any printed comparison test that says to the contrary.

    Then I will feel better.

    and michael,

the op was asking what was the better car for a first time porsche owner. as a road car a modded 997tt is tough to beat in any category.

as a true track toy, i would agree that the gt-3 would be more fun, more manageable and maybe even cheaper to event.

i take no issue with your gt-3 being a nice car however. i hope that message is not lost.

i hear you. i have owned a few of these cars mentioned. i have some basis so i hope that works to help you get comfy.

i am not a fan of internet banter as i have paid considerable dues in racing as well as car ownership.
my comment "lightly modded" and "raped" were not well chosen words and not well qualified. i'm sorry for the lack of descretion.
