430 Challenge Headers with Protective Heat Shield

Hello friends. My name is Chris, I'm new to FerrariChat. I've been tracking Challenge Cars for a while and I ran into a situation where my original headers broke on my 430. I'm decent technically, and do most of the work on the car myself. I just thought I'd share something with you guys that I am now using, but I've never seen anything like it on the market...

I was referred from a friend to a company in Georgia, who is an importer of Capristo Exhausts. I don't remember the name of the person I dealt with, but they were very helpful. They suggested that I fit 430 race headers with a new protective heat shield. Evidently, this thing is made from some material used in space exploration? I took a shot, ordered the headers, and the heat shield, and installed it on my car. It has cooled the engine bay of my car drastically, and I'm not sure if it's the weight of the original OEM exhaust that I removed, or the new, improved headers that I installed, but my car's performance has improved noticeably. I took this photo from their site and was just wondering if anybody out there has the same product, or something similar, and what your experiences are with it? I improved my overall best time by 1.1 second at the track that I frequent.

Hi Chris. Welcome to FChat. It's a wonderful community and SO helpful. I also track/race a F430C and I just installed the Capristo headers. I assume you're talking about Andrea Taurino. He indeed knows his stuff. Chris, I also noticed a very nice increase in torque with the headers and I'm hitting personal best lap times all the time since then. I really want the header heat shields. I don't have them and I worry about the underhood temps. I will pursue them right away. I wrapped my headers with header wrap but I also want the heat shields you have.

Hi Paul. Good to see that I'm not alone with these modifications. What I noticed when I removed original exhaust system, which consisted of the headers, sports cats, and the rear muffler, they were so heavy I could hardly pick it up, as opposed to the new headers I got; they were so light that I thought to myself, for a Ferrari race car could they not have installed a lighter system to begin with? The other point I felt is the torque and response of the engine was incredible, not to mention the sound. I noticed now and I am following your thread. I can't believe how good looking your car is now, I'm trying to save money to get there too.

 

I would think by removing the stock headers and Cats. the underhood temp. would be cooler by less restriction less heat build up, how would the heat underhood be on a Scud. street car ,

 

You are correct by running a complete exhaust you will have less heat than the stock scuderia exhaust however these heat shield will work on the stock scuderia or aftermarket system.

We actually just got our first set in and they are pretty impressive because they are much thicker than I expected, and same materials that nasa uses on their space suits. The design makes it so they cover the headers and cats all in one unit, if you need access to the exhaust you can just unclip them.

These are nice because they work with stock or aftermarket exhausts...These heat shields however do seem to be much more effective than just running a jetcoating or standard heat wrap. I would say these are a must for serious challenge/street drivers that want the best.

 

I went to the vivid racing site and tried to look up the header heat shield blanket with out success.
Can you post a link here for the header heat shield ?
Does the header heat shield blanket fit other models as well (ie 360, 355)?
Whats does the header heat shield blanket retail for?

better vented - plexi glass hatch.
revised - titanium header fixed mounts tabs by the collector and hanger sections.



i'd seriously research before using any product on any f-car, should a fire start and then sue company, they fold and what are you to do next.

Very cool (literally, I suppose!). If you use the heat shields with stock exhausts, do you need to remove the OEM shielding first? Any issues with running these shields in place all the time on street driven cars?

 

No, there is no need to remove the OEM shielding. These heat shields fit right over the OEM Ferrari exhaust headers and catalytic converters. All they will do, in this case, is reduce temperatures more than the conventional steel shielding. Not to mention, in the case there is an oil spill on the material, it will not ignite (as we will show you in the video that we're currently filming, and will be posting shortly). I would strongly recommend this application to be used in racing cars, which endure considerably high heat temperatures in the engine bay. As many of you guys know, the cooler the engine bay remains, the better the performance of the vehicle. We found that when we dyno'd a car with the headers exposed, temperatures reached to around 270C (518F). As soon as we covered the manifolds with our innovative heat shield, the temperatures dropped to 80C (176F). One could see how beneficial this situation can be.

@stevengt3 - I tried to capture some sound bites with my phone, but the quality isn't very good. I'm definitely going to try to get a better quality camera in the future. While I was trying to download my poorly recorded sound bite, I ran into another 430 that I could compare to my sound. I noticed that this car has got a rear muffler, not sure why, as I'm running straight pipes from my new headers. It looks like this car also has a Capristo system that's comparable to mine. The only thing that I'm working on is trying to make my car look as mean as that one.

I was just sent this video by the company that sells these products.. I'm glad that they tested it for themselves so I didn't have to make a mess in my garage! (because if I did, I'd probably burn the house down, and be left with nothing but these heat shields to keep me warm this winter)

I ordered this heat barrier system and I should have it within a few days. Since I like being the guiney pig, I'll install, post photos and report on the success. Stay tuned.

 

A common issue with Scuderia's is the damage to the resin in the carbon fiber next to the small factory heat shield that is riveted to the engine bay panels. You can see it in the Scuderia in your video on both sides next to the stock muffler. There is a large halo where the CF is yellow/white.

Does the heat shield extend far enough to deal with this issue on the stock exhaust?

 

I see that these will also fit the stock 360 headers. I am seriously considering ordering a pair.

I wonder if there would be any benefits to using this material to insulate the muffler box? It might further reduce the engine bay temp and thereby protect some of the electrical and F-1 pump from greater heat cycles.

 

At the moment we have the kit for the headers and cats as these components radiate the most heat .

My only concern has to do with the effect of the insulation on the headers and heat sheild.
Since the insulation keeps the heat "in", will the metal headers and heat sheild suffer from becoming hotter?

 

The exhaust heat shield supplied by Capristo contains a special reflective material. This merely enhances the effect that Ferrari was aiming for with their own heatshields, to prevent radiant heat from cooking everything around it. Also remember that that the exhaust gasses passing through the header is still at their original temperature and flowing away, so no heat is added by using the shields. The plus factor of the shields is that this heat is now flowing to the catylytic converters where it is used rather than being radiated into the engine bay. The original headers and covers will suffer no ill effect from using the new shields.
