These engines are virtually brand new, and that looks like some turbine blades have let go. Wouldn't imagine a maintenance issue, more like foreign object damage (unlikey at altitude) or a materials failure.

Just remember the motto:

"If it ain't a Boeing, I ain't going"

Just curious, when you book a flight overseas, can you request to go on the airbus???

Or do you just get seated on whatever plane they have flying that route at the time?

the MTBF is one engine every 25 years so this was highly unusual, speculation is a turbine blade

I heard about this an hour before it was reported (friend has a brother who is a pilot in QANTAS) and the first I read on the net was from Reuters who listed it as CRASHED !!

****ing idiots scared the **** out of many people, then newsasia.com had the plane landing after burning off fuel

 

Every time I jump on a plane I look out the window and sigh relief when I see Rolls Royce engines.

Having said that the A380 has RR engines. If anyone saw the documentary on the building of this aircraft they deliberately caused a turbine failure. The external casing was supposed to be able to retain any broken parts.

It's 5 minutes but worthwhile watching. Does make you feel safe on these things. There were a lot other things in the construction of this aircraft that concerned me. It'll be a few years before I have the confidence to jump on one.

last time I enquired BA and QANTAS are the only airlines that have their own inspection crews while the plane is being built (this was some time ago)

remind me about this when we see each other in SA, got some stories to tell you

nope, that's not the reason, there are checks done EVERY flight after landing and it's all written up in the logbook.

The guys who will be most worried will be the engine fitters but this looks suspiciously like a fatigue or faulty blade problem, either way they are all crak tested and Xrayed plus other testing so hard to imagine any human error here

I was first told it exploded... Heart sank instantly. The media has been praying for such an event involving Qantas.

The moral of the story is that make sure that the plane you are flying on is using GE engines.
