Hello, I'm currently repairing a 1986 328 with RHS damages. The steering rack and pinion are dead (Cam Gears make). The complete rack is no more available, but I managed to get a new one from a fellow who had a spare for his car. This new rack is a TRW make. The gear ratio is correct, but the overall length is to large by approximately 10 cm (3'). Does anyone know if this is a normal situation due to the non avalaibility of the correct rack? In this case, the rack should be machined to the correct length. Has anyone carried out this operation? Is it only a question of cutting and tapping the inner tie rods? Thanks
This new rack is used for the wider Mondial / TR, it should only be 2 longer though. You can not cut the ends off, and add an extra 1 of thread. The inner tie rod neck will measure out to .460, and you need .500 for the ½-20. Your options are to find the correct inner tie rods, or find a new rack.
Many thanks for the answers. So I guess I have to find a proper steering rack for a pre abs 328. Please contact me if you know about one available!
