I have had my 348 spider for several months now but have not really ever driven it with the top up. Thanks to the cold weather, I finally conceded and put the top up. Here is the issue:
When the top is up and the windows are all the way up and the ignition is turned off, once you open the doors, the windows drop down about 2 inches and don't go back up. There is obviously some switch that must control this feature somewhere. Does anyone have an idea what would resolve this isssue. I noticed there is a small switch on the driver side where the top pin goes in, however I am not sure if that is what would be the switch craeting this problem. Any help would be appreciated.

Do your windows go down the same amount when the top is down and you open the door? Mine does and when the top is up it doesn't. I'm sorry I am not sure about the switch but I would believe that it has to be the one where the top closes. If they doesn't go down with the top open it would be wired backwards and if it does you would have a bad switch. I am sure someone will give you exact details. Good luck and let us know what you find.

There is a common issue with the wiring harness connector in the door jamb, where the door is hinged to the post (usually the driver's side, since it is the one most often opened/closed). The wires are known to corrode, become loose and/or break off at the pins, which will cause problems similar to what both of you are describing. It's easy to check. Just pull back the rubber cap on the connector and take a peek at the wires underneath. There are several threads on the problem and various fixes. Just search for "348 door wiring harness" or "348 door wiring connector".

This is a thread I posted earlier this year (DIY harness rewiring project on my 348):

I just re-read that thread and realize i did not post the how-to details, so feel free to PM me if you want more info.

i have a 348 spider, the operation of the windows is controlled by two micro switches and they only come into play when either the soft top is raised or lowered, other than that the windows are controlled by the door switches.

With regard to the door connector, the spider does not have as far as I'm aware the same type of connector as the earlier series round type connector, the spider has a connector which is rectangular in shape and, touch wood, I've never had any issues with them.

a solution, hmm, you're in the hands of the Ferrari wiring/earthing and any additions that have been made to the cars electrics like security/hifi etc may have a bearing on the fault.

if it were me, it'll be get the wiring diagram out and start fault finding, it does sound like that for some reason the windows are receiving a pulse to lower, so anything that might cause that situation needs to checked and 'isolated' in the sense of not causing the problem.

    keep us informed of progress...

Where are those switches located? I don't think the problem is a random electrical issue as it is a faulty switch somewhere.

the manual tells you so have a look for a more detailed info.

There is one located in the windscreen surround where the soft top locating peg slots into, this 'tells' the windows to drop an inch or two when the soft top is made ready to lower.

The second one is tucked right back in the butteresses and this 'tells' the windows to drop when the soft top is made ready to raise.

I have a 94 spider and had the same issue. It is the micro switch up by the drives head, in the peg hole. To test it put some klenex up in the hole an have it keep pressure on the switch. After I confirmed this was the issue I had to bend the arm on the switch just slightly to make contact when my top was up.

So I bought and installed the switch that goes into the top latch area and that fixed the window dropping down problem when the key is pulled out of the ignition. Now the drop down feature does not work at all when you open and close the door with the top up. Any thoughts on what controls this? Is the window supposed to drop down a little when you open the door(or am I just used to owning new BMW's for too long-lol)?

I don't think the windows are intended to drop down when the doors open/close while the top is up. Sounds like she's working as designed.

Correct, windows DO NOT drop when opening the doors like BMW's. They only drop when top is down. Mine had the same issue, ended up being loose screws that hold the bracket/sensor to the windshield frame. Before anyone bends the sensor arm, try adjusting the bracket using the 3 screws that hold it in place. They may have come loose and shifted the bracket preventing good contact with the sensor.

    Hello Jarret,

I need to remove one of the pins in this harness and attached a wire to it that broke off. Do you have some DIY instructions you can post for me.

    Thanks,
    Enzo
