And this is why Ferrari wins. They are not afraid to do what it takes. I feel sorry for Webber. Vettle up on the podium and giggling like a kid when he has basically slid the knife between Webber's shoulders. Webber just accepting it.
Ferrari opinion - The team comes first and the drivers are just pieces of equipment RBR opinion - The drivers come first and the cars are just pieces of equipment. Pick your preferred flavor - both have pros and cons...
Both team could get exactly the opposite of what you say, then? Ferrari lost the WCC but Alonso may get the WDC. Red Bull got the WCC but Vettel and Webber may not get the WDC.
If he weren't a Billionaire and owning two Formula one teams I'd actually feel sorry for the guy. perhaps not.
I would really like to know if he would make a statement like this if the roles were reversed, and Vettel had Webbers points difference...somehow I very much doubt it.. Seems crazy but it is his cash to do as he wishes, and I like the fact RB are in the sport.
I believe that Matesizch is in F1 for exposure, brand awareness and not really for scoring points and collecting championships, although this is an important way of measuring the impact and motivate the team. That's what makes Red Bull different from other teams, I believe. He is involved in so many different activities to promote Red Bull, that it became a major global brand, like Shell, Coca-Cola or McDonalds in very few years. Between F1, GP2, F3, Rallying, Indy, GT, endurance, air racing, offshore powerboats, Moto GP2, etc... there is hardly any major sport that doesn't get Red Bull footprint as participant or event sponsor.
I suppose one could argue that he's using F1 as a means to an end, but the drivers, engineers, and the rest of the team are certainly in it to win it. Although people tend to forget the "tradition" of team orders in F1 and its accompanying strategy, I believe he could care less which of his drivers wins the WDC, which is why he can be so cavalier with his attitude. I think he's more concerned with exposure, and a WCC marketing/media blitz doesn't need the face of a driver to be successful, just some sexy models and a slow motion pan of the car. It will be very interesting to see what happens on Sunday if Vettel is in a position to win the WDC, but will need Webber to move over. Yes, he's a billionaire, but his product is addictive (helps sales, just like tobacco) and at the end of the day its really useless...
It's a 50/50 shot that the Ferrari effect can come in. Perhaps they had told Vettel to pull over and let Webber past in Brazil. FIA would have probably stripped the team and drivers of all points for the year, and barred them from competing for the next 50 years. Ferrari effect.
If there were any stockholders.....on the flip side; if Ferrari didn't do what they did in Germany then there would only be a 1 point difference right now. Which would have really made it more exciting. The Ferrari anti-sentiment is growing if Alonso wins the title by less than 7 points. Jenson Button also used the word 'Tainted' today...
What is wrong with the best driver winning that day? I know that sounds naive, and maybe it is. If I were Webber, I would want to win it on my own steam, not because Vettel decided to be a chump and let me pass. Vettel was faster this past weekend. Should Vettel take Alonso out Nascar style, or is that too much? Where does one draw the line? If I were Alonso and won the WDC by less than 7, I don't know how much I could enjoy the win knowing I only won because Massa moved over for me in Germany. The win is a lie. This is my first year watching F1 and I have enjoyed it, but this team orders thing is akin roided up baseball players crowing over home run records.
If Vettle hadn't had 2 engine malfunctions early in the season he would've been crowned WDC last weekend.
If he did not overdrive his car on a regular basis he would not have had two engine malfunctions. Their job is more than just turning a steering wheel
Team orders are easy to embrace when there is a clear #1 driver: Schumacher/Barrichello/Irvine Senna/Andretti Alonso/Massa There are more examples.... RB has been in a quandary all season because both drivers have had ups and downs to the point where no clear contender stamped his authority on the WDC. If I were a team principal in F1 today (and historically) I would choose reality over the illusion that team orders are "bad", meaning that a quicker driver should always get the full support of the team, including his slower team mate.
You play to win the game. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRxm0oGbnRI Ferrari seems to understand that.
Applying Team Orders, and Vettel moving over by his own accord are 2 different things, and if we see Vettel being able to "help" Webber in the final laps, I think we will. I see these comments by Dietrich Mateschitz as almost an alibi.
IMO, Michael Andretti threw himself off the road without any assist from Senna- unless Wendlinger was in Aryton's pay ;-)
I am surprised by all the comments here. Dietrich doesn't know how to run an F1 team? Really? Is that why they've clinched the WCC and may get the WDC? Also, I am surprised so many people missed the obvious, in their rush to slam Red Bull and Mateschitz. He said that the team will give no order, and it would be up to Vettel. What do you think he should have said? "We will order Vettel to move over if it means Mark wins the WDC". Why not just put extra high-power engines in the cars for the last race and then be sure to tell the press you're doing it. Come on guys... of COURSE he is going to say they aren't going to issue a team order. Of COURSE he is going to say that the drivers will do whatever they will do. Even Domenicali wasn't dumb enough to tell the press that Ferrari cheated, even though everyone saw and knew they did. And Dietrich isn't a dumb guy. Maybe he's telling the truth and Vettel won't be told what to do. But there's probably a 1% chance of that. More likely he's just not dumb enough to announce in the press that the team have already pulled a Ferrari and cheated.
Mexico 1964, last GP of the season. Graham Hill and John Surtees are the only two left in contention for the title. G.Hill is leading in points. During the race, Lorenzo Bandini (Ferrari) rams Graham Hill's car and takes it out of contention for the title, ensuring a win and WDC for John Surtess (also Ferrari) this year. Everybody now forgets about that incident and heralds John Surtess as the first man to win championships on 2 and 4 wheels. At the time, many sympathised with G.Hill. Some would say it was Ferrari's 'tactics' that decided the title.
