What is high mileage for a 348? I know it is a subjective question and how the vehicle is used is a part of the equation but how long do these engines last? Is 50k to high? Is a 50k well maintained engine that has had its service good for another 50K? or is the Ferrari a highly stressed engine that is worn out at 50 and needing an overhaul?

A well maintained engine will last. I know of 2 local cars here that have over 50k (one is 57k and the other in the 70's, might be pushing 80k by now).
And there is a member here from northern Cali with over 100k (drop him a pm and see how his car is doing, it's doing great from what it seems. User name is PinoyP, he has a hot looking black TS

Maintenance is key on these cars

like all things mechanical there is no secret, keep 'em working and serviced as per the maintenance schedule using the correct parts and procedures.

nothing worse than having some garage queen that only comes out on high days and holidays and has been 'tinkered' with.

A properly, well maintained 50K mile 348 is better than a the opposite of that in a 10K 348 (or for any model for that matter).

In my opinion, proper maintenance, on schedule, trumps high mileage 8 days out of 7

My 348 has almost 58k miles.

    Once sorted out, no issues.

    I agree.
If you're selling, the mileage is too high.
If you're buying, the "low mileage" costs too much.

The reality is that a decently maintained car will last many many years. How many miles a year are you going to put on? Is it gonna blow up during the course of your ownership? How many years at the average of 2500-3000 miles per year is it gonna be til then?

My 348 will have 45K on the clock soon, and it runs like crazy. The secret is, IMHO, that the previous owner drove the car, hard on occasion, and serviced it properly. If it had been a garage queen, even with servicing, I'm not sure it would be the same story. It's like your body -- if you don't work out for 20 years, the abs disappear and a flight of stairs can become a real nemesis! So, it takes time (and sometimes money) to get back in shape. I wouldn't fear a higher-mileage, well maintained 348 at all.

Agreed. Carbon buildup in the cylinders is a major problem in a car that doesn't get regular Italian tune-ups.

My 355 has over 100k miles on it. Never caused me much in the way of problems in the 8 years of owning it.
But still no matter how many owners with high milage stand up and be counted, this high milage question gets asked again and again.
High milage 355s rock and can go on and on if looked after. My 355 spider may not be worth much as a 10k mile gararge queen. But it looks exactly the same, sounds the same and runs as good if not better than a 355 worth 10-20 grand more.

These cars were meant to be run at red line!

I have had everything from a 308 to an F40, with a little TR thrown in for good measure. I also owned Chupacabra's 348 for 20 years. I have driven them all, rather than park and polish. They have done track days, and hillclimbs.... trips and grocery runs, and the more I used them the better they ran. They were always over maintained. And they were always cared for....... and they always ran like scalded cats. But beyond everything else....... they memories they made are irreplaceable.

I know of a rental place that had a Gallardo with over 80K on it ... they said it runs better than any other car.

I'm having this discussion about a particular high mileage 355 I'm considering. What's the worst I could be facing? If the engine has leak down issues and low compression? I'm going to get quotes from local mechanics to see what the cost of a rebuild would be.

If the leakdown and compression numbers check out, then I wouldn't worry about the mileage.
