Agreed. But what if the leakdown and compression numbers don't check out? What kind of expense are we talking about for an engine rebuild?
Really expensive. Don't be that guy. If the leak down numbers are bad then run away - plenty more gorgeous 355s in the sea. The definition of bad leak down numbers can vary (everyone has an opinion) but from my research and experiences - anything over 8-10% would give me serious pause.
The only issue with High Mileage Ferraris and other exotics is the amount of Smiles and Memories that you have from driving the heck out of it. I had a 34,000 mile Stradale that drove better and stronger than some of the 6,000 mile cars according to a couple of good independant mechanics. Owning a Ferrari and not driving it is like having a Playboy Centerfold Girlfriend and waiting for the next guy to "F" her. "If tomorrow never comes" Will you have enjoyed it?
Mark, precisely what Rick said. There are plenty of excellent examples, don't get hung up one car, you will have your choice
The thread was not about enjoying it, the thread is about getting something that has already been thoroughly enjoyed by somebody else... So - do you want that centerfold that has been... anyway, forget that picture! I have had much, much enjoyment from both cars and women that had previous experience, most of the times even more so. Generally there is a reason anything or anyone is more virgin than what should be for a given age. Not that I don't agree on the statement to use it as much as you can and like. Don't be afraid for troubles along the way - if manageable, they deepen the bond. 100k or even 200k is entirely possible - just depends on treatment and maintenance. As in any relationship! Just stay away from the dogs.
I'm asking because I'm assuming that once I buy a 355, that I would eventually face the day where a rebuild was necessary. The speculation in my family from all the people that want to deter me from buying a Ferrari is that it would "total the car". I'll ask the local mechanics if nobody here knows.
$25k for starters to rebuild the 355's engine if it comes to that. Cylinder liners are $8k, rings $3k, head gaskets $500 each or so, etc. That's a basic price. If things are broken that need replacement, it's more.
