10,000 litres of fuel leaked out of the damaged tank.
    7 tyres failed on landing.
    No big deal.

    yep. and:

"No L/E slat however T/E flaps out. Emerg Landing Gear extension. Normal brakes??? Only 1 reverser (A380 only has reversers on the inboard engines). I thought the A380 had multiple hyd pumps scattered around the aircraft instead of eng driven hyd pumps. Overall would have been an interesting landing considering the FADEC on #1 may have frozen at power setting when failure occurred (full power in climb?) and only 1 reverser on landing.
Now how much are pilots worth in situations like this???? (side issue)"

Really amazing effort by the pilots involved. One blown engine, one stuck on climb power, loss of certain hydraulic system(s) = no leading edge slats on left wing and manual lowering of the landing gear, reverse thrust on one engine, near or at max landing weight, pissing fuel out... everyone on board should thank their lucky stars. That's about as close as it gets, I reckon.

The captain is ex-RAAF... 'nuf said.

Used to fly Caribous. The joke is that he would therefore have a lot of experience in landing a stricken aircraft. lol

Poor bugger then ends up being a pax in the B744 that had the engine shutdown.

There were three Captains on the flight deck, plus first officer and senior Engineer. And it took all five very calm heads to bring her down.

There were numerous issues with the big girl, but I can't say here what went on, apart from yes, those people were very lucky for the experience up front on this particular occasion.

Joyce and the QF PR machine wouldn't be able to tell which part of the aircraft is the front and which is the back.

They're just beancounters, not aviation people.

My understanding is that it was a check flight for the Captain (hence the presence of other senior pilots).

    Gee, I hope he passed.

Maybe on the next drive day I will dispell the myths. There are four Senior Captains on the Qantas payrol who were the first guys trained on the 380. They are now the check Captains for the other guys and they basically teach them how to fly it.

One of those four blokes has a lot of class coz he has a Testarossa and a Mangusta!!

ummmmm, how can a qualified airline pilot:

    a) get himself into that situation in the first place; and
    b) if so, have no idea how to get himself out of it?

It's akin to someone with a driver's licence not knowing that if you unintentionally turn the steering wheel to the left, you then have to turn the wheel in the opposite direction to correct the error.

    Pathetic.
