We all know what a GREAT car California is. I have a few gripes I want to get off my chest:

    1. The transmission at best by my description is 'nervous'. In normal driving its not very evident but when driven hard the upshifts and downshifts seem all confused sometimes changing too fast or not changing at all till one redlines it and then the gears go crazy.

    2. Whats up with the volume knob?? One has to wait a second or more before the volume changes after the knob is turned.

    3. I had the pleasure to drive it in the rain last week for the first time. When in the rain sensing mode the wipers either go all out crazy or will pause few seconds before wiping driven at the same speed and rainfall. Extremely irritating!

    4. I ordered the Cali with Daytona seats. Cannot find a comfortable driving position in these seats. Dunno what experience people have with diamond style stitching.

    5. Ferrari couldve done a much better job on the navigation and satellite system. There are much easier and intuitive navigation systems available by garmin for $300 or less (which my wife uses instead of the factory installed unit).

    6. I've had to take the car in thrice already with problems from the roof not closing properly and then jamming up. Unfortunately our local dealer does not have any loaner cars so either one has to wait at the dealership or get whatevers available from local Hertz store (paid by the dealership). When I had the Bentley they either used to come pick the car at your house or provide you with a brand new Mercedes as a loaner no matter even if it was an oil change.

Well thats it for now. In addition the California to me seems like a 'girly' car. It doesnt give off masculine vibes like Scuderia or 599 etc. Its my wife's car so shes the principal driver and is happy with it. Maybe I'm getting old and picky! Would love to hear from other California owners about their pet peeves on this car.

I would never buy a car with uncomfortable seats no matter how nice it looks or how fast it is, comfort is priority. Sorry to hear.

A girly car? You just damaged the egos of all the guys on this forum. We can no longer drive our Cali's with our heads held high.

I do not think it is a girly car. And it does not sound like a girly car. It certainly is a beautiful car.

The Daytona seats do not fit me. I understand the diamond seats are more comfortable.

I have not driven a California. Afraid to. I might really like it. Drove a 456 which had lots of torque and lots of understeer. My 360 has the best turn-in I have ever driven. Just a joy in the twisties.

Ok, let me get this straight. You're concerned that "one has to wait a second" for the volume to respond; that the navigation could be better; the rain sensing wipers aren't perfect; the seats could be more comfortable; you don't get a new Mercedes when it's in for service. And, YOU are calling the car girly?

Mine has no problem with the transmission, it is perfect. No problem with volume control. All cars have their moments with rain sense wipers, even my Mercedes. Yep, Daytona seats could use a little more padding for my skinny butt. Nav system, they all can be improved in one way or another but I have gotten used to this one. With almost 17,000 miles on the California since last December I have had plenty of time to try to understand it. My dealer picks mine up when there is trouble ... and it is over 100 miles away. I have had no top trouble and it goes up & down all the time, probably dozens of times at each car show I took it to this year.

Rick uses his car as it was meant. He puts gobs of fun filled miles on it. This car was designed to go after some Mercs and Bimmers. If you understand that, you understand it's brilliance. If you are thinking is a low priced 458 spider, you're going to be disappointed.

Now ... a 458 for a second car??? Making the California my "Salt Car"? Now that IS brilliant!

I will have the snow tires on it by Sunday. I would put them on today but a neighbor and old friend asked me to take his graddaughter for a spin tomorrow, and I want a bit more stopping power then brand new snow tires can provide. Sottozero series II ... hope they are as sticky as my Michellin Ice X 2's are in snow and ice. We will see.

    Rick- Nice avatar.

Sam- My car does not have any of that stuff and I still like it. Sounds like your wife likes her California, too. On my car you can turn the clock on and off and adjust the time, check the external temperature, and adjust the interior lighting. That is about it. Still works fine.

    Terry,

Thanks ... it was taken this summer after winning the US Nationals for radio control cross country sailplane flying ... the Ferrari intimidated the competition driving a jeeps and pickups. Note, three grown men in a California!

Rick- Congrats on the win. I have ridden in the back seat of cars with much less room than your California. I survived.

I too found my daytona seats very uncomfortable when brand new. But after they got broken in, the seats are feel fine.

Hopefully you will have the same experience.

That's what I'm thinking will happen. They will soften with age and use and I never want them so soft that they aren't supportive for my lower back so I'm enjoying them now for their supportiveness and looking toward more comfort in the future.

My Cali has over 7000 miles in as many months but no signs of breaking in of Daytona seats. Maybe I need to wait another 7000 miles! My whole idea of this thread was to voice my opinion on certain irritants this car came in with and not to accept the whole package just cos its a FERRARI. First time buyers/drivers of Ferari California probably dont share my sentiments.

I still stand behind my comment of Cali being a girly car as it has a feminie demeanor akin to Lexus SC 430. Same cant be said about Gallardo/Murci, Scuderia, 599, 458 etc which are 'masculine' cars. Dont mean to ruffle any feathers of male drivers of Cali as no matter what its still a Ferrari!

Never could understand the girly car issue. It seems this issue always pops up on sports cars. Some men worry about the car they drive must be a male only car. Must be a hormone issue. I buy cars because I like them and could care less what others think. Now for the firmness of the seats, I would like them a little more girly.

The California doesn't look like an SC 430 at all to me beyond the two being both hardtop convertibles. The side of the SC 430 is a slab, devoid of any detail. The SC windshield is less raked. The SC has a shorter wheelbase. The SC's front overhang is shorter and the rear is more rounded and subdued with no obvious ground effects except for a token spoiler on top of the deck. On all these dimensions, and more, the California is far more aggressive and reminiscent in styling to a 599.

So I think you're loony, sorry.

It is funny how people interpret items, events, etc. There is always debate regardless of the issue. It seems that this is a common thread throughout many areas of humanism. I guess thats why Ferrari makes 4 different platforms. Different strokes for different folks. I personally like the California's style - less aggressive and exotic suits me just fine even though if you knew me you would think I am probably more suited for an M-1 tank. Some feel the 458 is more typical of a manly design - not sure why except that it is designed to profile a more aggressive posture. Does the more subtle design of the Cali make it less suited for men? Of course not. Some people just like to stir it up for the sake of the discussion. Love the Cali and the wife does too!
