CCCVIII is getting a Nick Forza Ferrari Electromotive Distributorless ignition. Want to credit contributors who help, supported and informed on the system- thanks. The job would be overwhelming without FerrariChat.

    1) black & tan 1979 308 GTB-
    2) Engine before-
    3) work (valve-cam adjustment) in progress
    4) Electromotive coil bracket
Updates/photos to follow as installation progresses.

good luck wiith the installation. I did it some two months ago. It's some work if done correctly but it is a real improvement. I capped the dstributors pickup with some simple 3mm alu sheet

It looks like you removed the O-ring base and capped?!
I planned to put cap over base. Thoughts?

ALT belt remove-install is a hassle

    Thx for finished pic- nice.

    Rick,
The ISO sketch for the bracked uses Google sketchup. The ISO drawing won't attach to FerrariChat for some reason. Probably need to push an unknown button. Will post the ISO asap. I probably will have an extra bracket if you need one.
    Not advertising- just saying.
    The over all dimentions are-
    all metal is 1/4" aluminum/
    coil plate is 14"x3.5"/x1/4"
    attach plate is 6.5"x3"-1"x1/4"
three holes (for a 308) to attach at the orginal frame mount bolts are on 2 7/8" centers.
gusts are 1/4" triangles 1/4" stock

I'm installing the Electromotive coils to the plate this morning and will attach pics later.
    Cheers

Note: The brake vac hose and water hose are in the way. A metal tie-wrap holds them in place. Cut the tie-wrap and re-attach hoses lower near oil coiler-oil filter hose. That lets the new bracket attach to the original Ferrari coil frame bolts.

I'm sure I've posted this before, but 2 things to keep in mind -1) Install a seperate engine gound, preferrably from starter bolt to chassis; 2) After crank timing ring is installed and engine timing is VERIFIED with timing light, remove locking set screws one at a time and reset with loctite. Other than that, installation is by the numbers.

Your reminder here is a good thing. Thanks.
Made 308 dizzy blanks today. See below.

Note- the coil bracket prototype is modified beyond the sketch layout. Oooooops. Early coil brcket draft came up- bad. Trying to get right one to install. Sorry for confusion.

Note2- Oil cooler air scat blocks attaching nuts for bracket. Not enough room for top-down attach. So, working on a simple bracket mod to simplify installation. Attach Mod sketch to follow ASAP.
    Cheers.

Here's the prototype designed on Google Sketchup (cheap/free app).
Still having issues with editing dimensions.
Also, during installation noted attach bolts are a ***** to get to. Working on design mod to simplify installation and will post mod ASAP.

Found a simple solution for installing th Electromotive coil bracket. Remove the original Ferrari coils from their attach plate (the one that bolted the coils to the frame). Flip that plate upside down so the 10MM bolts stick up. Bolt that plate back to the frame inverted. Drop the new Electromotive coil bracked down on the three 10MM bolts. Done. Simple & easy coil bracket installation.

Note- No gussets are needed between the coil plate and the attaching trapezoid if using 1/4" aluminum.

re the bracket dimensions- The trapezoid that attaches to the frame should result in the Electromotive coils being parallel to the engine. The dimensions on the sketch put the coils at a slight angle. The trapezoid's dimensions should be 7"x3.5"x1"x1/4".

Electromotive says to avoid temps +150 degrees. So, XDi should be mounted in cockpit. Problem- that means (ugly) wiring harness font to back- not good.

Has anyone installed the control box (XDi) in the engine compartment (temp issue) forward of the driverside data plate (on the flat above the rear wheel)? Would the bonnet clear the XDi if bolted there?

Any pictures out there of XDi's running Ok anywhere in the engine compartment an NOT subject to temp issues?

When we did Steve's 308 (fasterisbetter), we mounted the control box and relays in the upper left hand corner of the trunk and brought the wires into the engine compartment over the left rear inner fender well. No heat related problems. I personally would not mount the unit in the engine compartment and expose the control unit and relays to the heat and weather.

I mounted my TEC3 in the passenger compartment on the bulkhead behind the passenger seat and bore a 1" hole through the bulkhead into the engine compartment to run the 2 wiring harnesses. This also allowed me to connect my laptop to the TEC3 unit for tuning and monitoring - that feature is not available on the XDi.

    Nice clean installation.
Do you have a pic of the engine compartment with your routing of plug wires?

Post #2 shows what we did with Steve's 308. I mounted the coil packs on the front and rear firewalls and ran the wires according.

The '79 trunk has deep wells on each side. Looks like the XDi, tach box will tuck in nice.

Question re the two relays- each have the circuit printed on top but don't identify wires by color. Electrimotive installation manual doesn't show the relay wiring. We can see the key-2amp fuse and two 10amp fuses in the circuit. But the wiring of the two circuit breakers aren't called out. Relay wire hookup help please!

    Paul,
    Thanks.
Sometimes looking at the wiring diagram the next day makes the obvious apparent. The relay wiring diagram is staring me in the face. Got it. Much ado about nothing. Onward.

That's what I'm talking about. Eye candy. Nice. Thanks.

I made an extra aluminum bracket for the XDi coils. See the pictures above in this tread. Its not drilled yet and may fit other models. The base is designed for the XDi coils (1/4"x3.5"x14"). If anyone wants it PM me.

The bracket you see in my old 308 came from Wade, if I recall correctly. It was not drilled. We marked and drilled it to mount to the bracket from the stock coils, which you see on the left of the bracket. It was a simple, bent piece of aluminum, pre-drilled to mount the XDi coil units. We just had to drill to mount to the car. Worked out great.

Looks like it fits good. How long have you been running XDi ? Any issues? CCCVIII installation moving at the speed of cold tar- cold weather slowing it down- a reptile mechanic.

I made two brackets for the XDi coils both out of 1/4" alluminum and designed to attach to the original coil-frame bolts. On CCCVIII the coils are upside down so the leads (yellow) feed off the top for nice/clean apprearance. Project now focused on routing wires coil-ignition out of sight from coils to boot.

If anyone wants the second XDi coil bracket PM me. We can work something out.
