Hi all, Does anyone know with certainty what the 2011 regulation changes are? so far I have been able to find: movable rear wings 2.2 ltr v6 twin tubo engines with KERS have to use bio fuel (reduces engine efficiency hence the turbo's) 2 new tracks it would be great if we could all share some FACTUAL information on this
I don't believe the engine change is in there, correct me if I'm wrong. And don't they already use some type of biofuel?
They introduced bio-fuel in 2008. It was a 5.75% blend. They are proposing 10% for 2011 and a 30% reduction in fuel. These numbers may of changed since the last document the FIA released.
Good point, though I've seen numbers of 30% bio fuel for 2011. This significantly reduces the engines ability to make good BHP numbers so the teams want to introduce turbo charging to restore some of the power (similar to LPG which has higher octane rating but burns less efficiently and is the reason cars running on LPG make less power and the engine burns more LPG than gasoline). Interestingly the document I saw noted that exhaust driven and electronically driven turbocharging would be considered, would'nt it be great to see different teams take a different engineering take on the two systems and see the results on the track. I'll try to find the document and post it up.
Surprised no one has mentioned this, but NO MORE double diffusers or F-ducts. Also, the moveable rear wing deal has some caveats: No wing movement allowed the first two laps of the race. There are certain areas of the track where it is allowed to be used. The wing can be used/adjusted only when the driver is a certain distance from the veh that driver is trying to pass. Someone please clarify my post if I am off, which I am sure I am a bit.
Actually you are right. It's not so much the engine rules one should focus on, but the aerodynamics. These are the ones that really determine the kind of racing we will have in future and in particular if cars will have more or less grip (less preferably), if it will be easier or harder to overtake, etc... The engine rules are now so tight that there isn't much scope for progress there, but there are still huge difference between cars in the aerodynamic field and consequently the level of grip and lap times.
I could be mistaken, but I don't think so. [IIRC, Pirelli wanted 18"s but "they" decided that would be too much of a change for next season. As for "fixed weight distribution" that's a new one on me - Source? [I don't see any way that could be done] I also believe engines remain the same next year. I think..... Cheers, Ian
I wonder if some of the teams with drivers not in contention will use AD as a "post season" testing opportunity for some 2011parts/settings?
Definitely not "parts" IMO - Mainly because they haven't got any 2011 parts yet!.... [Do they even know what the rules are gonna be yet!? ] "Settings" maybe - "Let's try this and get some more data." Really only applies if you're definitely out of the points though - ie, a puncture or something that puts you a couple of laps back - Other than that, "hope springs eternal" and they all believe they can score, even if it means the 10 front runners have to blow up..... Does anyone know if the tire tests there next week are gonna be televised? Going OT, I was surprised to hear the Speed guys saying neither JB or LH were participating and only SV from RBR (?)
Note: At Interlagos, it was the first time the boys had been down in the 1:11s (Vettel Weber practice 3) since the 950 HP V10s ('04 or '05). So, apparently the aerodynamicists have subtracted about 200 HP of drag from the cars (F-Duct) and fully utilized the non-groved slicks.
Also minimum weight of the car increases to 640kg, here is the link to the document previously mentioned although it is dated march 2007 http://www.fia.com/resources/documents/332668895__2011_Power_Train_Regulation_Framework.pdf
Sorry, I can't find the exact link, but I think it was an Autosport Ross Brawn interview or news story about focusing their efforts on the 2011 car earlier this season. Here is something I was able to find, if it helps... http://www.f1technical.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=9108&sid=1afb6f7aeb7cd1125dbd90f60423597e&start=0
Thanks for that - Interesting. Seems this "fixed" distribution only applies in quali trim..... I dunno, but guess what Ross is looking for is eliminating the "build the car *way* under weight and then apply ballast as desired" approach - I can see the logic of that and the increase in minimum weight should help there. The biggest variable is obviously the new tires - I can see a big shake up as some of 'em get it "right" and others don't..... Cheers, Ian
I wish they would leave the regs alone, every year something changes and it just seems someone comes up with something genius like double diffusers and F-ducks and they get banned 1 or 2 seasons later. I could understand if it got to the stage in the mid 80's with the turbo cars which were actually dangerous, but they're not.
F-ducks LOL... See how we go with Todt at the helm, hair brained ideas brought in on a whim were Mosleys ideas, KERS a fine example, In now back, but now brought in, in a manner all can use in a affordable way.
