To tell you the truth I'm just proud that the Scuderia didn't just give up on the year way back mid-season. The season really looked hopeless after Britain, didn't it?

Give credit to Alonso for racking up podium after podium and putting himself in a position to win the title when he is in only the 2nd/3rd fastest car... quite an achievement if he could have pulled it off.

Renault certainly stepped up for their brother Renault-engined Red Bulls today, didn't they?

Disappointed that we couldn't pull it off, but we have to concede that the WDC went to the fastest driver with the most poles and the most wins. What more is there to say?

I really like the pts system that retains the ratios while give the mid-fielders something to fight over. Also I believe our current 3-stage "shoot-out" is absolutely incredible, because you see all of the teams on the track in the hour. For many years the backmarkers got out on track, laid down the rubber, and then the aces would come out with 5 minutes left in the session and put in 1 or 2 banzai laps and so basically if you blinked, you missed them.

Also the new qualifying system means that from time to time an "incident" will happen to one of the aces, and they won't make it to the final round and will have to "carve through the field" come race day.

Very enjoyable season with the fortunes shifting back and forth.

    A very good year...

    Frank

Yes on every single one of your points.

    And to add:

I was somewhat stunned that not more came from Webber. He had the same anonymous race as Alonso did. I guess they both realized Vettel was unbeatable today and were hoping for that Renault engine to die.

I think Alonso and Webber sort of cancelled each other out, as they were more worried about each other than just running the race. I think Webber pushed too hard at the beginning and wornout his option tires which forced him to come in early. And Ferrari made the mistake of bring Alonso in early to counter Webber's early stop. This is not a good passing circuit, they should have known that traffic will play a major part in the race.

IMO. as well as Webber did this year, unlike Alonso, Hamilton and Vettel, it has much more to do with his equipment than his talent.

I would also prefer to sack Alonso. No soley for not passing Petrov, the Renault is just fast enough to make it difficult to pass on any track for any driver.

Actually, the entire team needs a revamp. Domenicali did get his act together, but very late. Massa lost his wind and it would be best for him to go to a better team.

Alonso is not the right image for Ferrari, his loss today is wonderful karma. I would have preferred Webber as WDC, Vettel has shown much arrogance this year, but still I was pleasantly surprised that someone other than Alonso won the WDC.

Kimi won it in his first year with Ferrari, gee, too bad Alonso could not do the same.

Agreed; I'm wearing my Red Bull hat in my F- car today. Alonso is showing what we knew all along; he's talented and everything is great when things go his way. But he's still the same spoiled brat when they don't.
Being a 2 time champion doesn't mean you have matured. Too bad....

First congrats to seb n red bull. They would have wrapped this up much earlier if they were more reliable. That said, time for massa n domenicali to go. I will take the hulk please.....

Hello Betrayal! That was a quick comeback...

Look dude, I was/am a big Kimi fan too, but he didn't get kicked out of Scuderia Ferrari because of Alonso's arrival but because he didn't deliver. If he had performed at Ferrari the same way he did when at McLaren (and the car broke down every race) he would have won several titles and Ferrari wouldn't have made a deal with Alonso.

As for walk and talk: Alonso has two WDCs to his name. Both against the mighty Schumacher. And I'm pretty sure he'll add a third next year.

Didn't see this thread so I'll basically just say what I said in the race thread.

Never would have expected the season to end that way. But congrats to Vettel never-the-less. Youngest ever F1 champion! Great achievement!!

P.S. Alonso shaking his fist at Petrov is exactly why I'm not a fan of Alonso.

I'm a bit sympathetic for Webber, as he was up earlier in the season. And, he's not nearly as much of a whiner as so many other drivers. Plus, being 34(?), the clock's ticking pretty loudly for him. Probably one more reason the team's going with the kid - lots of years left for Vettel.

Alonso's gotten to the point where his personality is his greatest liability. Wonder when Ferrari's gonna figure this out and move on to someone who can win in a marginal/good car setup?

Actually MS and Ros tagging each other which resulted in the SC coming out played a bigger part in the grand scheme of things.

The SC played a vital part in proceedings because Rosberg and Petrov went into the pits to get rid of the soft rubber and get on the more durable hard tyres. They rejoined at the back, but as the race progressed they moved up the order, with no further need to stop...

I don't feel any sympathy for Webber. If the race was running Vettel, Webber, Alonso I have no doubt that Vettel would have let Webber pass for the win and the championship.

Now looking at the last 20 laps it was clear that Webber had no chance of winning but he could have played a helper role by passing Alonso. He sat far enough back that he couldn't even monopolize on Alonso's errors. In my mind he purposely decided to not attack once he realized his chances were doomed.

The best man won, congrats to Vettel

I will say Alonso showed zero zip class giving the finger, it only fuels the fire of his dislike.

A stupid act, no matter how pissed off he was.

Understand your comment Steve, and I'm not making excuses for him, but, how would you feel at the end of such a race? He was no doubt frustrated, disappointed and upset - We all do some stupid things in the heat of the moment I feel.

Now, for the conspiracy theorists, would Petrov have "allowed" his Renault powered buddy thru?..... ;)

Seb owes young Vitaly (who didn't put a foot wrong under pressure) and Rob K some thanks here.....

    Cheers,
    Ian

    Agree.

Congrats to Vettel. Lew and JB had good races.

And to Freddie Alonzo. If you can pass Petrov in the most important race to date, and you have, what 25 laps to do it, then how can you shake your fist at him. A world champion would have gotten past the rookie. (Rookie, I said.)

Thanks for what? Doing his job?

Does Alonso owe thanks to Webber and Vettel for not finishing Korea? Or to Button for not challenging him at Monza?

Absolutely! Young Vitaly has been labelled a crasher and pretty much useless by many (most?) here. He did his job very well today - He had a two time WDC, in what is generally considered a superior car, filling his mirrors for a lot of laps. Many a rookie would have folded.

    Not my point at all.

    Cheers,
    Ian

Yes, I would be pissed off Ian no doubt, but under no illusion he had to let me through.

I dont know for sure but I think Frank posted a picture of him shaking his fist whilst racing him, if true Petrov would have firmly shut the door on him at that stage. He is on a world stage but maybe he couldn't care less.

Of course. I don't think he expected him to [I'm sure some here will claim that he did, but they're race car drivers - They know the deal!] For whatever reason, Freds car simply wasn't good enough to get by today. [AFAIK, Fred's not saying that he should have let him thru?]

I didn't see that during the race, but also aren't sure. However, I doubt there's anyway Vitaly would have seen it even if true! :)

    Cheers,

Congratulations to Vettel! So do I have this straight. Alonso, former two time WDC beating MS for them but also being undone twice in his career by rookies?
