F1 is rigged
All I'm saying is that there should be a time limit to posting results in a header. I too have had races "ruined" by tuning in here before watching my taped version so now I avoid Fchat entirely until the race has been watched. Dont even watch the news or read the paper. Fortunately US radio is free of any F1 news so is immune But to wait until the first race of next season before a "Vettel wins championship" is kind of overdoing it. PS didnt read the "Button wins championship" thread till now; Funny.
In a nut shell thats it, IF you really don't want to know the results, don't take any chances. Over here its easier said then done tho..
While the above was in jest, it appears the mods thought the same!.... [Unless he went nuts somewhere else?] Consistent moderating is a rare thing Cheers, Ian
+1 I haven't checked the "demographics", but I guess I can understand the Brits & Aussies etc failing to understand that fact...... Here in the States, you've really got to search out the results. Plus, the time difference typically works against us so the DVR is your friend. Between the live race and settling down to watch it I should be able to visit Fchat (it is my home page btw) without worrying about spoilers. [I know not to visit the F1 section, but there's lots of other stuff I like to read and I've had races spoiled by dumb thread titles.] Cheers, Ian
Why? What is gained by ever allowing this? Where is the improvement of the discussion or the forum by doing this? What is the point of allowing race results in thread titles? I honestly don't get it. I see no advantage, no positive element, no reason that race results should be allowed in thread titles. That said, there already is a time limit for posting race results in thread titles. aventino demonstrated that fact by not getting banned for posting a result from last year, when Button won the WDC. Obviously, this time limit is subject to the judgment of the mods and that is all we need. We do not need to change the letter of the law, if we're already mindful of the spirit of it. .
Actually, he is (or was briefly) banned!.... I dunno if it was this infraction or something else, but the moral, and the rules, remain "don't post spoilers in thread titles!". Simple. FWIW, and I haven't checked the rules, it's any potential spoilers that will get you in deep kim-chi, not just results.... Cheers, Ian
+1 to all the above btw. I like the consistency as well - There's then no excuse "Oh, sorry, I thought the rule was XX, not YY". Or, "sorry, I'm in a different TZ" etc etc. Don't ****ing do it! End of debate! Cheers, Ian
It does seem to be a pretty annual theme. Maybe when it comes up again, the mods can explain the rules, again, and lock the thread? Save everybody some time Cheers, Ian
Just for the record, the consistency is not 100%, and the rule is not absolute. I once opened my browser to do some work on a Sunday when a taped-delayed race was to be broadcast (was not shown live) and happened to see the result in a thread title on the front page of F-chat. I posted to ask if the offending user had received a ban, and he had not. No sour grapes here, just pointing out to Ian, who actually posted in that thread his opinion that no ban should be imposed, that the spoiler rule is not enforced 100%. Cheers! I made it all the way to the Wednesday following the race before I even had a chance to watch qualifying from Brazil. Then I watched the race on Thursday night. I was very careful where I went online in that time period and nothing was spoiled for me ahead of time. With Abu Dhabi the result was spoiled before I had a chance to see the race because I forgot that I have one Facebook friend who's an F1 fan and I had recently added the Facebook app to my phone. It was a bit of a disappointment, but life is full of them. I like FChat's rule and appreciate that most people have no problem abiding by it. >8^) ER
Whoa!.... It's true that the rule is not 100%, and indeed length of ban seems pretty arbitrary on occasion. The mods have a lot of discretion - Was it a genuine mistake, quickly remedied or another bonehead post by someone who's done if before etc? Having said all that, I did not say he shouldn't be banned!..... The OP in this example screwed up, reported himself (via the "!" link) and it was remedied within a few minutes [No solace if you were one of those caught out]. Then it seems he was "piled on" by some here and threatened to leave the club - I said he should suck it up and come on back. I never said he shouldn't be banned. He well & truly learnt the lesson without a ban, which is OK I guess. Cheers, Ian
I couldn't agree more with you. It seems that this silly rule was introduce to satisfy a few individual who can't be bothered to follow closely their 'favourite' sport,a nd wait for the next weekend to watch all their recorded stuff. In between, there is an 'embargo' on information, so as not to spoil their little selfish interests. Once, I unwittingly fell foul of this rule, mentioning inavertently the winner of a rally. I got banned for 10 days for my crime !!
Bull-****ing-****! You just don't get it do you? There is no "embargo on information". There are no restrictions on what information you can post. You're welcome to post on whatever topics float your boat - no problem. Just don't make the thread title a spoiler. Easy, simple and everyone is happy. Having said that, 10 days does seem a little harsh for a first offense. OTOH, you haven't done it since have you? Cheers, Ian
For those who don't know, I do a bit of modding on this forum. In general, a week is considered reasonable to protect results. If someone doesn't bother to look at a recording in a week, tough for them. First time offenders will usually get a short 1 day ban, just to remind them of the rule (which has been in place since the early 21st century, and even the sticky is from 2004) If someone is a repeat offender, or is known to be an anti-spoiler agitator, then the ban length increases. That goes to intent, or trolling. To again make a point -- nobody's right to free speech (which, BTW, does not exist on a private website anyway) is being infringed. You can speak about anything. Just don't put things that will destroy other people's enjoyment of the race in the title. This used to be known as common courtesy.
I wandered back through the archival thread for banned users, and don't find any reference to any 10 day ban for spoilers. If you remember the date let me know via PM and I'll see if there's any comments on that ban and the length.
If F-Chat were strictly F1 that might be a reasonable position. Many here follow a variety of threads and when we may have missed a race live and haven't had the time to watch the tape yet we'd still like to be able to check those other threads without fear of spoilers. Absent good reason why not just cut your fellows a bit of slack?
+1 [I obviously don't visit Autosport, PF1 or like, but here I *should* be safe.] Indeed. It may also be worth noting that not all races are even shown live here in the States - We have no choice but to wait for it to be shown later in the day. I'm careful in what I do and where I go (*never* visit the F1 section for example) but should be free to visit the site without fear of some boneheaded moron putting a spoiler in the thread title (which I can see from the home page). Anyone who doesn't understand is being selfish and inconsiderate. Cheers, Ian
