As I stated in many threads and early on. I am new to Ferrari. I am a few weeks into ownership and hitting snags that are well outside the bounds of the manual. I am not some idiot that has never worked on a car or seen an electrical schematic. I am an engineer & business owner. I have designed, installed and repaired thousands of pieces of equipment. I have worked on cars since I was 15 as a hobby and I enjoy it.

I did complain about the condition. I am disappointed in the transaction. However, I did buy it, I own it & I'll fix it. But I certainly have a right to post questions & photos of what is wrong and ask for help. If the seller & friends seem offended well, so be it. Tell me why I am wrong and I'll learn. Telling me to shut up and deal with it is not why I am here.

I am not in over my head as Gary would suggest. I have owned several twin engine airplanes and know what to expect in repairs and operating costs. These cars are cheap in comparison. I also know what good & bad maintenance looks like...on a car or on an airplane.

I do not want to start that pissing contest. It does not matter now. But hey, you want to read the eBay description here it is: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160486544561&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT

    ========================
Now....I have dug everywhere under this dash and there is NO OBD connector or bracket as described in the manual. Am I asking too much to at least know where the connector is?

I would really like to track down a wiring diagram so I can start the process of repair. Finding one seems to be pretty difficult. Any ideas out there?

I do not believe it is that you asked the questions. I believe a lot of the frustration is that you called the former owner a POS. I too would take offense. If what was said is true, i.e. that you demanded to take the car despite being told it was not ready... and took a box of new parts the owner was going to install for you, then yes... in my view you crossed a line.

You have every right to ask questions, but by being insulting to respected people who it seems did try to act honorably you alienated yourself in the Ferrari community.

Consider it so then. Had the same happened to a perfect stranger I would feel and do the same.

There are (9) I's in the first paragraph of your reply. Telling one who feels such as strong need to pound their own chest, all while belittling others, where they faltered is much akin to Peeing on an electric cattle fence.... you 'can do it' but even in my simple mind it just ain't worth it.

It is very fortunate you are as accomplished and intelligent as you are. What is outside the bounds of the written manual regarding electrical and the F1 system on that car is endless and much of it never written at all. What is written is only about 3/4 correct, cross the wrong wires and double your current investment. For about half the price you paid for the car you can buy your own SD Tester and hook it up. You can't read the Motronic system or F1 system by plugging it into the Capote Top system diagnostic plug but what the hell... it was worth a try. It has no SD Plug? I wonder how the DSPO could tell me all of the faults it had when he would hook up the SD and I would ask him a question?

I take no pride in doing this, there is no upside for me, I have no dog in the fight and it only causes me harm to fight battles here. Offended I am but this Net crap has grown some pretty thick skin on these bones. There is absolutely no way in hell I will stand by silently and watch good people get wrongfully slandered in a senseless way and hold my tongue. I now see a public apology to the DSPO and a talented tech is quite out of the question so I will let this drop, I have had my say on the soapbox. My fathers family called Neenah and GB home for a great many decades, this is not how things are done there and not how folks treat one another.

    Ok,

I'm gonna "publicly" help you here and turn the other cheek to the personal attacks.

First off, this connector thing is *VERY* easy and I'm not certain why you or the shop could not locate them. In fact, Enginefxr had an SD connected as part of the PPI....

If you remove the center dash vents (carefully) you will find the OBDII connector. An outside vendor did this many times and I witnessed as such.
Second, there are "individual" CAN connectors at every ECU that may also be used and frankly are the choice of most shops. The plug you referenced "just hanging out behind the seat" ....well.... thats one of them. In one of the other photos you posted I can clearly see the main ECU CAN connector. These are ALL small connectors and look NOTHING like an OBD2 connector. Not sure what the broken wire is, looks like a seat potentiometer wire to me.

So not only is there 1 connector behind the dash there is a connector for the ECU, TCU, AIRBAG, ANTI LOCK, on and on and on.

Once you take readings with the SD you will see the importance of the "gold connector" kit...That is some good reading on these threads.

I am sorry that you are disappointed but as the seller I gave you every opporitunity to make your own judgement call. I even reduced the price $4K to cover most of Enginefxr's repair costs, which is something that hasn't been mentioned on here at all...

I am asking you to stop with the attacks/comments/etc. The guys on here are a great bunch. I know for a fact you are off on the wrong foot, I would back up and start over as nothing good will come from this....Trust me

    Peace.

This has spun completely out of control. I never meant it to grow to this. I do not want a public war.

I will look again this evening. I have found the SD connectors for the shock ECU & TCU not the others yet.

I have a good portion of the under side apart and can not see the OBD connector where it shows in the manual. I appreciate the guidance and will pull the vents this evening.

I agree...i ts not how things get done.... I do not know you, never met you and appreciate the experience you have on these cars.

You have an open invitation for a visit, breakfast, lunch or dinner anytime you are in the area. I think once we meet me eye-to-eye you might have a different perspective of who I am and how I operate. I am not the person some have been making me out to be here.

    Be well,

    Randy

I have a feeling your car's OBD II connection was pulled out. The location should be underneath the steering wheel on the right, if it's not there, it was pulled out.

You may very well be right Randy. I form opinions based on what I read that was written by you alone. You made some terrible mistakes (my personal opinion only) in writing what you did and in the manner it was done. Having personally perfected and hold the record title for making mistakes, I understand and quite often wish for a do over. Its a terrible feeling when folks are attacking you publicly, I too know that feeling... think about that next time you speak about the DSPO in those terms. Once attacked their reply's are in question to those reading this but in this case I am quite deeply involved. I know some of what was stated to be completely false and what was Not stated, changes the whole story line.

Its a very small world this Ferrari ownership thing. Burning bridges and slandering people is your purgative as an owner but make damn sure it is based on truth alone. This Ferrari experience can be very rewarding or the biggest PITA you have ever lived. You choose to take the path of a Flood Salvage car you reviewed, drove and signed a disclaimer on, Gutsy move but one I was very close to doing myself. Your plane... that's kid stuff compared to what you signed up for here, there are well written manuals and parts available for those. I am about to test out for my A&P, I know of what I am speaking about on both subjects albeit far from an expert on either. I work on and maintain cars worth far better than 100 times what yours is worth, owned by people worth 1000 times what we both are combined, on a regular basis... Ones net worth, the toys they own, their positions in life.... meaningless to me. If they feel it should have meaning to me then it is unlikely I will be working for them, careful with that approach, it doesn't work with the real owners and pro's in this market. You are important because you are now in a very limited club of Ferrari ownership, let that be enough and enjoy it.

As I stated early on, I have no dog in the fight other than 2 good people were damaged by statements you made here are friends I have never met. It is my wish (and yours as well I suspect) that this problem could be reversed, a car fixed and you then able to enjoy a passion most here have experienced or still dream of. To that end I wish you the best of luck. You will find folks quite forgiving in this 'club' as we have all perfected making mistakes, its how one deals with those mistakes that is the true test.

I don't know what to say about that..... When did Jewels become Junk? Inflation?

All this talk about broken Red Sleds and then the possibility of inflation affecting more than I want to think about..... I need a vacation.

No time to dig into it yesterday. Had parent teacher conferences & a late dinner as as result.

The idea of pulling the vents and associated duct work for access to the harness seems like a lot of work.

Unless there is a reason not to, I intend to just pull the two screws on the instrument cluster and pull that aside for access. Seems like that should be a heck of lot easier and a better view actually. Any guidance?

Looking forward to the end of this week.

Pulling the vent is easy. Likely you won't have to pull the ductwork. In any event it's a careful "slipout" to pull the center vent and take a look. Up and toward you. Ya just gotta revel in the Italian logic of these things!
PS: Oddly enough, many of us respond well to being called "Stooges".

Yes, pulling the vent is very easy ... just be careful of the wire that's connected to the red LED light for the alarm on the vent.

+3, simply remove the vent, just do it carefully, as first suggested...it is not that big a deal.

I don't understand why anyone (including me) is even posting in this thread or attempting to help in anyway...

Dave Helms you are saint to continue to contribute here.

Think of it this way: Everything you guys post becomes part of the Forum archive and benefits more people in the future beyond the OP of this thread. Everyone who invests in using the Search function will have access to this information later.

I was just the beneficiary of an old, long thread on alternator tensioners. Gave me a place to start my diagnostics without having to start a new thread titled, "What's this funny noise coming through my firewall?"

Wow. It is like an erector set. I pulled the instrument cluster out in about 15 minutes. Quite simple and makes for easy access. I can see most of the dash wiring now. Way easier than I expected.

I'll lift the vents out later as the red light is not working and I need to see what's up. I'll follow the procedure posted here. Thank you for the directions and guidance. Breaking plastic parts is an unwanted hobby of mine so we'll see how that pans out later.

There is an OBD connector!!! On top of the harness, coiled & stowed under the center vent duct. Without removing the instrument panel (or vent) I would have never seen it. I need the brackets on the underside so I can mount it to match the location referenced in the manual

I have not plugged into it and will work though that tomorrow. Other issues arose, but that's for me to correct tomorrow & beyond.

I did get to drive the car today. It is has a special feel and sound. Very cool and quite different than any machine I have had in the past. There is work ahead, but it'll get there in the end.

    Be well,

    Randy
