I am planning to work on my sticky interior parts, and was wondering if/how people are preserving the white lettering on parts. I would really like to repaint w/ a satin finish that looks more factory, but don't know how I would be able to mask off something like that. I did a search and found it mentioned, but it seemed like guys were just cleaning off the goo, repainting over the symbols.

    Thanks!

What do you use to clean the sticky paint before the finish?

This past weekend I detailed the car and used some Amorall cleaner wipes on the sticky interior door handles (latches). They were quite sticky. Anyway, with a lot of rubbing, the stick coating came completely off and the finish left was great and there was no issue preserving the lettering too. I'm doing that to all of the other sticky surfaces. Try it see if it works for you too. Beats the cost of the carbon fiber aftermarket components and it maintains the stock look.

Some here have used oven cleaner with good results but I don't know if it preserves the lettering.

The Amorall cleaner wipes do have some mild detergent in it ( I guess), but rubbing is what does the most. Try it.

I've used methanol (in paint section of Lowes) with GREAT results on plain plastic ABS bits.. not sure about the white markers though if they would hold up.. Paint literally bubbles off with the methanol.

I did the oven cleaner thing. Found that some of the lettering stayed on just fine, but other spots (like the arrows on my heater vents) came off. Seems to be a bit of a crap shoot.
