I was researching this also, I like the idea but not sure about how practical the build cost would be over a conventional home.

I looked at that particular house as well ! --I would have to agree for a primary residence i'm not sure I choose this type of home. Im thinking more of a weekend/getaway spot to crash though

I drive by it fairly often depending on which route I take getting home. It's on Vail a block or two south of Manhattan Beach Blvd in North Redondo.

Interesting- I would've never found that on my own. For some reason I thought it was on the south side.

seems like it would appeal to yuppies in a decade or so like how the converted warehouse lofts appeal to yuppies of today

I really like this idea. The low cost to build something so unique is the most intriguing part, though the architectural design itself is a 90's throwback IMO.

That wouldnt be that hard to do from a building standpoint. I had a big container that I purchased for 1500 delivered a few years ago for a european parts company I had.

You can stick frame the same space just as cheap if not cheaper as a container, so I dont think the cost is that low, it is unique though and a nice re use of materials...

It must cost a fortune to heat and cool. I think a better idea would be to design a low end one for third world countries.

I could never bring myself to do it. A lot of modern architecture has lost the elegance it once had.

It still is kind of cool though, and I suppose on a budget or if you were crunched for time it could be nice.

There are two challenges with this type of construction.
    1. The ceiling height, and
    2. The width if the container is difficult to work around when you are combining multiple containers to create a larger, more open space. For example, consider how you would design a staircase. Everything becomes very narrow.

Challenging for the designer and not for everyone. However huge cost savings if you are comfortable with the dimensions in the design.
