I have located a very nice one owner 1997 F355 Coupe (yellow/black) with 10K miles. The car needs a major, and the asking price is $60K. However, the title is a duplicate title. This is also indicated in the carfax report which the dealer has provided. I have never purchased a car with a duplicate title. Should this be a concern? Also, what is a fair price for this car since it needs a service asap (the belts were never done).

    Thanks

What else was 'never done'? Service history is a big part of buying these cars.

Yes, that is the car. Any known history on the car? I went to see the car yesterday and it looked very clean. But they were unable to get the service records for me at that time.

The duplicate title shouldn't be an issue. The previous owner could have lost it, it could have been destroyed in a house fire, it could have been lost in the mail at some point, it could have had incorrect information printed at one time.....the list goes on and on. Only a salvage or bonded title should worry you.

Sounds way too expensive if they're not including the major. I'll sell you mine for $52k and it doesn't need it's 3rd major for another 2 years or 24,000 miles. ;-)

The price does not include any service or work. That would be in addition to the asking price of $60K. I figure the car is worth $48K as is.

I disagree. Duplicate titles are typical of cloned exotics, where a wrecked or stolen or high mileage Ferrari is made to look like a low mileage, clean car.

A duplicate title can be a simple as a car that had a lean and was paid off. I had one years ago that I had paid off and never received a title. When I finally went to sell the car I noticed I never received it. The bank only sent me a letter certifying that I had paid it off and I had to apply for a duplicate. I know that I had to verify that I was the owner and the letter was notarized so I would think it would be free and clear on a duplicate if you purchased it.

dont sweat the duplicate portion of the title. it just means, like everyone else has said, that the title was lost or destroyed at some point. that title is no longer good for anyone to use. the thing to worry about is if the title was duplicated after that one.....

that could happen to anyone, but not typical.....

i wouldnt even sweat it at all...

and the "clone" thing. why wouldnt they just use the original title. if you clone a car from a wrecked one the original title should still exist.

get the title insurance from autocheck and pull carfax as well and make sure the is no title discrepancy. i will tell you there, for sure.

but the money on the car seems high to me.

just sayin,,,,,,, u can have my 1999 f1 spyder for less then that

I think $60k PLUS the major is a bit steep, especially with no records of the service history.
