Is Loctite Green 290 appropriate for use on the head studs that are installed in the holes that open into the water jacket of an (iron) 246GT engine block?

    If not; what is recommended?

    From Loctite Threadlocker 290 overview:
Recommended For use on metal fasteners 1/12" (2.2 mm) to 1/2" (12.7 mm) in diameter such as pre-assembled fasteners, instrumentation crews, carburetors and electrical connectors

    From Loctite Threadlocker 290 Features:
Benefit: Protects threads-Prevents rusting of threads

I wouldn't use Locktite on head studs. Antisieze, not Locktite. If you had a seepage problem 518 or liquid teflon sealant would be better.

i would not use locktite or antiseize. torque them down to the specs they say. use oil or they sell some oil for this at Napa i think. you want a good torque reading.

He is not talking about installing the heads. He is installing the studs. I think.

A lot of different head stud manufactures like ARP for instance advise against using thread locker on studs. Instead they recommend using teflon paste if necessary to seal or help hold the studs in place. You can find teflon paste in the plumbing section of any hardware store, it will say "teflon paste thread sealer" on the bottle.
