Sometime after the first of the year I'm planning on buying a new laptop.

My current laptop is 4 years old, so I keep them for a while. These are my critera:

    -Reasonably priced
-Lots of RAM (i'm always multitasking)
-Not a Dell, any brand that doesn't come pre-loaded with a bunch of crap software is sought-after (my current is a Dell)

I'm thinking Lenovo and Asus may be a good starting point?

    Any other places to look?

    How about a Macbook?

    KIDDING KIDDING..... I'm a kidder :D

Lenovo - not sexy but built like a tank. I have a T60 that I run
XP and Linux on and it just runs and runs.

But ALL commercially sold PC laptops come with "junk" on them. ALL of them.
As in 100% of them. The ONLY way to have a computer with no junk is to do
the OS installation yourself. But you'll not likely do that on a new laptop,
as all the system drivers (internal hardware) will not be available anywhere but
    the original OS install disc/partition.

I'm a function over form kinda guy. :)

I figured some of the other commercial may have "less" software.

The new Dell Adamo is really nice... It's not very tough to delete all the pre-loaded crap you don't want when you first get it (just spend 15min in the add/remove programs panel).

    Definitely NOT a Toshiba.

I just bought a Samsung, and am quite happy with it so far.

My last Alienware didn't come with any bloatware on it.

I've had more laptops than most (There are currently 9 in my house right now) and I can say that a Toshiba is fine. Actually, most of them are just fine when it comes to the hardware.

If you are worried about the bloatware (I agree) spend some $ on a real version of Windows and reload it when you get it. That is what I usually do.

Wow! That seems like a lot of work [Worthwhile though..... I guess I use my trusty XP SP2 disk that way whenever I need it.]

Having said that, if you're going that far, I'd take a serious look at Ubuntu (not Apple! ;)).

    Cheers,
    Ian

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on an Acer AspireOne (D250) over the weekend. Nice software, works a treat. Lightweight.

    Thanks everyone.

I've actually played around with Ubuntu on my uncles computer. It's cool.

I still have months before I'll pull the trigger.

Dan,why not a Toshiba. Funny,i was just looking at the 17" Toshiba to replace my 18" HP. Seems that no one makes 18" laptops anymore.

I had bought the 17" Toshiba Satellite, Right after the warranty expired, the touch pad stopped working. Then, about 6 months later, the hard drive just about failed completely. I was lucky to be able to recover what I had on there.

In a nutshell, after 1 1/2 years, the POS was completely useless. Never again.

I always use the Dell Disk that come with the PC to go back to a clean windows. No junk included. That's on Business laptops, but I think it's the same with consumer/home pc's as well. Takes 15-30 minutes to reload.

I almost bought when we toured the Ferrari Factory this May but the OS was in Italian,
when we we got back and researched Acer, I did like what I saw when it came to service.
