I've entered my F355 in a BMW Car Club hosted event (must be a member to enter) for Saturday, December 5 at Qualcomm stadium west parking lot. The course is typically over a mile long and always some cool cars to watch. Starts around 8 am and timed laps for trophies after lunch until maybe 4 pm.

It's free to spectators (Stooges too)...so if you feel like it, come by to watch, support (or harass) a F-chatter, or maybe work a corner for a session.

Related question ... I'd really like to put my Challenge wheels with R-compounds on the night before and drive there / back with the track rubber. Would save a lot of hassle and dragging lots of extra equipment.

I know the tires are not DOT legal but is there really any good safety reason why I shouldn't do this?? What are the chances of getting stopped/ticketed for it?

Obviously, if it is raining I will keep the regular wheels/tires on. :D

PS THIS IS ON SATURDAY, DECEMBER 4TH. Sorry, I posted the thread with the wrong date.

I've done it. I have R compounds--Pirelli Corsa-- that I drive all the time on Challenge wheels. I drive to the track-180mile round trip with no problem.

As long as you have tread, R-comps are legal. If they're slicks... well... uh... no.

I love R-compound. I was thinking just tonight about getting a set for my M5 because I'm getting too much wheelspin in this cold weather with the crappy tires I have right now.

It's rough when you have to granny shift!

They are Hoosier R6 tires...I think I'd say they have grooves...not so much a tread pattern but also not pure slicks.

I'm probably being too anal but when I was racing we were always watching how many heat cycles we put on race tires. Most race tires tend to go off after a certain number of heat cycles. I'm not familiar with the Hoosiers and I'm making a broad assumption that they are super softs hence the tendency to go off after too many heat cycles.

He's most likely not going to go through a heat cycle cruising to the track unless he's taking the 'scenic' route.

In AZ you'd be fine unless the weather was less than ideal. In CA you may be thrown in the slammer.

In cold weather and when the race tires are cold they will have less grip than a street tire in the same conditions. You will probably go through a race tire on cold streets/climate pretty fast with no improvements in grip.

R6 are good for the track. A6 tires have softer compound and are used for autox. A6 will get hot quicker and are good for short runs like autox courses (~60sec) but will overheat if used on the track. You may not get enough heat in the R6 because they usually need a couple laps before they get hot enough to work... weather dependent. Also if the tires are new they will work better... old R6s for autox on a cold day makes for a slippery day. :(

Yeah, I got a great deal on the R6s from a fellow F-chatter and figured I would do a track day or two. They worked great the first time - won my class at AutoX. Forecast for this Saturday is partly cloudy and 65F. :D

    FAIL.

Couldn't get the Hoosiers up to temp and spent the day doing my Tanner Foust driving impression. Almost put it into a portajohn on my last run so I called it quits.

It was actually a lot of fun though - just frustrating that I couldn't get a clean lap in without scaring the crap out of everyone including myself.

R6 are lame even on roadcourse. heatcyle out really fast. I use A's on roadcourse and way under the hoo hoo recommended pressure too.

If they were given to you I'm willing to bet they had already heat cycled out (hence the free part) and were hard as rocks so I'm not sure bringing them up to temp would have helped. Sounds like you had fun and that's the important part!

I got them brand new from a Fchatter - had been heat cycled by tire rack and run 1 auto-x by me. Should have had plenty of life in them. After a few runs of sliding around they just weren't up to temp - could hold my hand on the rears no problem.
