82 Ferrari 400i $17,500

Hello,

Just came across this at Gullwing Motor Cars website. No relation with seller, just thought I would post in case anyone was interested. Not sure if it has been noted before.

Seems like a reasonable price, but ad doesn't give much details. Does anyone know anything about this car?

I love the interior color with the piping on the seats. Looks pretty clean for that price.

 

That does look like a very nice car. I guess the low price is a sign of the times. But if I was a buyer for it I would want to know more about the VIN. They list it as #16427. That number belongs to a 1973 365GTB/4 (Daytona). It just might be a typo, or a simple mistake.

 

Or perhaps some owner modernised his Daytona to look like a 400... lol.
Stranger things have happened to cars in the '80s.

Seems like fair value - though the looks of the dash and such make me think it's not terribly well cared for, and the low price further points into that direction. Probably a car in need of quite a bit of tlc, as most other quality cars offered by this company.

 

If you do some research and find out it has the paperwork to cover your arse for state inpsections and has some type of record history, it may be worth the leap. I really like 400's...those I have spoken to who work on these cars say that they cost even more than other Ferrari's to get "right" so keep that in mind if it isn't in good condition...

This would require a carefull inspection by someone who really knows Ferraris and the 400i series in particular.

Gullwing Motors seems to have a reputation for offering cars that are not in top condition. Yes, they may be "cheap" relative to the better examples of those same models but, as we know, buying a cheap Ferrari might end up being more expensive than buying the best one that you can find in the market.

Not saying anything for or against this paricular car, just that it is always good to be aware of what is really there and going in with eyes wide open.

 

I love looking at Gullwings site...the cars seem ungodly cheap. I assume they are rough. They have a turbo 80's Bently for $15k or so... that is very tempting as a play thing... Looks nice in the pics ...

I think you can probably draw a fairly good conclusion about the car's mechanical condition when you see the previous owner cared so little about it that they let the door speakers fall out of the door panels in addition to the torn dash, the damaged front bumper, etc.

Having said that I think it is very interesting to see a series 1 car with what appears to be rear a/c installed. I can't recall seeing that in an S1 car. How about you Ash?

My series 1 400i (36147) also has a rear a/c installed. I think mine is a hybrid of series 1 and 2....

is a cheap Testarossa according to a thread I read here earlier today. Me thinks they could be wrong.

I saw my 365GT4 2+2 Friday. It appears really decent. Repainted and panels are not too smooth. Patina. Stitching pulled in places. Repaired. Pulled again. Surface rusted brightwork. Strats the way it should, shows pressure and doesn't smoke!!

Owners manual in Italian. No receipts yet. Probably never. Appears very original and , really, unused.

It's a driver at a real decent price point.

yeah my old one #31243 had a few S2 components but was an S1 car.

Actually I have several S1's that show dual a/c, including 32895,36937,38155,39577,41421,41533 and 41805. So it seems that there were several that ordered that option. Dual a/c continued to be an option through the remainder of the 400i series run and became standard with the 412.

I'm not exactly sure when the switchover to Series 2 took place, but I have benchmarked it as the first 400i with the hydraulic self-leveling suspension, which is 42705.
