My employer has tasked me with finding his original 288 GTO. He picked it up at the factory and sold it a few years later. We cannot seem to find any records and have tried DMV, Insurance, etc. Is there a registry that would give complete ownership history? The client's last name is Kaempfer.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.

If anybody knows 288's, it'll be "joe"...as they used to say at Chelsea Football matches when Sir Cole hit the pitch..."Joe, Joe he's our man" :)

Was he an original owner? His name could be helpful. There are often records of the first owner, esp on cars of historical vintage.

I have emailed FNA and am waiting on a response. The car was registered in Vermont briefly, but they have no records (at least not accessible) from 25 years ago. I also suspect the car was converted at Amerispec but I do not seem to able to find a number for Mr. Fritz.

    Thanks guys.

FNA will likely not be able to help you at all. The 288 GTO was before the time of the current entity so there wont be any records.

I will send Dick Fritz a message and see if he remembers JW Kaempfer but from my recent dealings with him I doubt if he has any records at all remaining from that era.

Looking at the original Registry it does not seem the car was purchased in the name of JW Kaempfer. Can your employer shed a little light on this? Also, surely he can remember who or what entity he sold it to? Without further clues from your employer this might be an impossible task.

As an aside, what it the purpose of this search? Assuming he finds the car, is the point to attempt to purchase it back? Given the current market chances of its availability will be slim. If he wants to re-live old memories, he might as well set on a simpler quest of just finding the best 288 GTO he can, and buying it. Let me know if I can help. I know a few good cars...

I am waiting to hear back from him regarding the possibility of the car being registered under a company name or spouse. I want to know where the car is just in case it is for sale. I am pursuing (with assistance) a few 288's at the moment on the assumption that his car is not for sale.

Joe, it would be fair to say that if you were able to locate Mr. Kaempfer's car and it was for sale, that I would ask your assistance in procuring that car. I appreciate all of your advice and efforts to date. You may be the only person who has a real chance of success here.
We can discuss further offline if you would like. Thanks again.

You also might want to consider contacting Marcel Massini, who has kept a database on 288 GTOs for many years:
