Just got my car yesterday. Three lights came on, check engine, and airbags. The car went from sunny california, to very cold temps in Canada. A good friend told me that his did the same thing, just need the really warm up the car. I notice on my truck, when its extremely cold my airbag light comes on. It eventually goes off when the truck warms up inside. Not sure about the check engine light. The engine sounds amazing. What do you think it could be?.

I think I would need a SD3 to do that, unless I can use my watch.

Is there another way I can run the codes off the car. The watch Idea would be lucrative.

Which car did you get? (how many miles? When did it leave California). Someone here might be familiar with your car. Did you have it shipped yourself, or did someone else bring it in? What year is it. Apparently it's possible on the later 355's to use a cheap OBDII scanner, but I think you need an upgrade to make it plug in.

Someone will chime in about codes, who unlike me, will know what they're talking about.

There is an electrical problem (short) and the change in temperture (cold) is not the issue.
As others have said.......you need to provide details on the car (year/trans) and read off the codes before anyone can provide any usefull advice..

The car is a 1998 ferrari 355 F1. If anyone can give me advice on how to get the codes off the car without spending 20g, it will be a great gift from Santa.

You have OBD2. You will need an scanner.....if you use the search function you can see which brands are recommended. Check out your local automotive store as the scanners are not expensive.
I personally have a software and hardware package that works with my laptop.....this is more than most people require (more for mechanics) but it allows me to do real time scanning (I can drive the car and watch/diagnose as intermittent problems develop).

Maybe some one else can jump in here and advise which portable hand held scanners work best.

Were did you get your software?. Was it expensive. Went on the partbin.com, they recommend many different scanners for the 355 f1. I will need to buy one, they also have different connectors. Were do I find the connector inside the car, is it underneath the Steering wheel.

I don't know the cost today as I got it seven years ago but its no where as cheap at the hand held scanners. I was'nt too concerned about the cost at the time as I needed the versatility to have a full real time scanning function for all domestic and foreign cars. In addition to the software it includes a universal interface so that you can plug the laptop into any obd2 portal.....as I said it is more for mechanics. You need to update the software yearly as well (for the newer cars). The hand held scanners start from around 70.00 and up and some even have limited real time scanning....but again the price can skyrocket depending on the features.
As I do not use one of these hand held scanners I cannot recommend a brand.....but search under obd2, scanners, ect as I recall reading many posts and recommendations for reasonably priced scanners for our cars from other posters.
The plug is under the passenger foot rest.

It is the plug to the right of the steering column. It is the male version of the plug you have on your scanner...it should be simple to figure out. There shouldn't be anything plugged into it...at least there is not on my 1997. You could remove this plug and see if it matches your scanner plug.

You will likely need to take it to the dealer or a qualified independant Ferrari specialist to handle the air bag light.

The OBD2 codes are grouped into families, so P1447 is likely an emissions related code too. The generic definition is an EVAP Emission fault - example: loose gas cap. Make sure your gas cap is on tight, clear the codes, drive the car for several driving cycles, re-scan and see if the code comes back.

On some vehicles, just having low voltage (bad battery, bad charging system or both) can cause all sorts of codes. First thing I would do is charge and test the battery, and the charging system. Then clear the codes and try again.

BMW motorcycles throw ABS codes all the time when the battery goes low. Scary the first time it happens, since the ABS computers can cost 30% of the value of the motorcycle (for older BMW's anyway)

All the codes before and after 1447 are related to the catalysts, exhaust bypass valve and catalyst over temp....so I really doubt it is the gas cap.

Funny you mention gas cap, a friend of mine just yesterday mentioned that. Does anyone know how the hell I get the Airbag light off. A friend of mine shipped his 355 from the states to canada, he said when he got here, the airbag light was on, so he put it in a heated garage, and and it went away. Has anyone delt with a Airbag light going on. What did they have to do to get it off.

See my post #12. I believe you require an SD1 or SD2 to determine why the light is on, and to clear it. There may actually be a problem with the air bag system that requires service. It may also have been tripped up by the previous voltage problem

The fact that you also have an Air bag lamp with the check engine light and it was aggrevated by the cold weather would have me looking into the base electrical system, alternator, battery and main grounds and power supplies in the car. In all likelyhood you have a low voltage supply to many of the ECU due to a base electrical concern.

I agree with windsock. If both the check engine light AND the airbag light illuminated at the same time, it has to be a voltage issue. When there is an issue with the battery or charging system it can have strange effects on other components. Get the battery checked. Clear the engine codes and drive it for 10+ key cycles. If the codes don't return, you're golden. Most airbag codes are "hard codes" meaning they don't go out on their own when the problem is fixed. If it doesn't go out when the battery/ charging system is checked, it will probably have to go to a shop o get turned off.

I wonder if I pull the fuse, and put it back if that would make a difference. Strange things happen with these cars. Does anyone know what fuse runs the airbags, looked through the manual cannot seem to find it.

I've read of a known problem with the 355, trying to start with a very low battery could fry the airbag ECU. Since reading that I always charge the battery if it sits for any time more than a week or so. Do a search in this forum for more details...

Read some previous posts, lots said about this. never again will I start the car with a week battery. Many just started pulling bulbs out of there instrumment cluster. You think its hard to get to. I wonder if you can go from underneath, or pull the top covering off the cluster to get to the light. I guess its cheaper then spending 1500 bucks. After reading previous posts, it seems like it a common thing owners are doing. I wonder if its easy or difficult.
