. Well the car belonged to William Paley of CBS fame. I bought it from the estate and had it shipped over here and then sold it to a collector from the Isle of Man. He also owns a lovely restored QP II and QP III as well as a few others. I am not sure who this is as this was the photo that came with the car (WM Paley's son?)- I will dig out some of my photos as I put it in the concours in the UK. I have first dibs to buy it back.

    Hi William

Vancouver, aaay?.....;>) Well, that is a lot closer. At least we were next to the same ocean! I am in Honolulu, Hawaii. It is an interesting place for cars. The city has characteristics of being both large and small. I don't see a lot of any one type of car, but there is an interesting variety here.

Oh, and the weather is pretty nice too!!.....;>)

    Aloha

Very nice pictures! The snow even looks attractive. I think it would be nice to have a white Christmas, but I would want it to get back to 80 degrees F the next day.

The flywheel on your car looks very suspect. It appears from the picture that the contact area is very uneven. I usually don't get concerned over some scoring and some heat checking, but I think that I would seriously consider surfacing that flywheel.

I am sure that the fuel pump system is fully functional, but I am betting the person that put it all together doesn't have a "Neatness Counts" sign on his desk....;>)

I have a local garage with some old mechanics who have worked on it all - in Kensington so any manner of old rare cars in there but it is not a Maserati specialist. Anyway, I bought a new fuel pump from MaGraths in the UK and asked my local guys to put it in but they say it did not fit. The pump is a replacement type and for some reason they say it will not work. A mess I guess and it will have to get fixed by someone that knows a bit more! Last time I was in the shop there was an old RR from the Quatar embassy with a seized motor. A few thousand miles on it and lots of dust and had obviously not turned over in 20 years!! Anyway, to these local mechanics it just an old car to keep going. NO cappucino while you wait but they will take out your gearbox for £50! Not for everything but you need someone who can do things. Would love to have a big garage and work on it but I could by 2 new Quattroportes from the showroom for the price of the garage.

Hi I bought an exhaust from STebro in Canada. They were very accommodating but the pictures will show some of the issues. I had a number of time said this was for a European not US spec car but they sent the US set regardless. Not sure how much it will cost to cut the pieces and stainless weld them to fit. They have offered an adjustment but the project is idle for a bit on this front. So moral is that Stebro make a set for this car but ENSURE you get the right set. Ciao

Some leather work to be done in due course. As I said with this car I would be tempted to go with the light cream interior that I saw on the new Maserati - wow. I would keep the 81 in London Tan (UK name for this pumpkin colour) and do the 86 in the light interior keeping the dark brown trim. Ciao

The three exhust systems that i purchased from Stebro had to be modified and welded to fit. A Merak Bora and Indy. The stainless part was on the very low side %

Well - Finally work will commence on putting the 86 back on the road after its repaint and then getting the 81 sorted. I have posted about the ZF rebuild but am ordering all of the parts needed for the suspension etc from MIE (love them).

Sadly, 2 years of research if buried in my Sony Viao that crashed (no illumination on the screen) so hopefully I can get some of this recovered. After years of persevering I have converted to the MacBook Air.

Anyway, if people are interested I will keep all updated!

    Ciao

Well here we go. I will post some pictures but the 1981 languishes on a pretty London street in SW7. I must say it does add a certain class and as one of my younger friends said when he saw it having never seen one before: "That's so Rock and Roll"! True. I know the cars are marmite for the forum and I can certainly appreciate the rarer cars I follow here but I think the QPIII has a place. Walter - I will try to keep the pictures modest.

So the car is actually a wounded beast which splutters and backfires and when creeping forward gives quite an alarming rhythmic scraping sound as the rear U joints are failing.

First step therefore is to completely rebuild the "bottom" of the car. MIE to the rescue with an order of essentially everything they make for the suspension and drive train. Bushings, U joints, shocks, springs, tie rod ends, ball joints etc etc. The order has gone in today - quite an alarming amount for what is essentially a low mileage car but 30 years of weight and all the years in the South African sun.

Also ordered a new front window and 5 XWX (1400pounds for tyres and $1800ish for window)

In addition all the belts and hoses etc for the motor.

    Hi

Well I head down to look at the 86 Fresh from paint but I was unable to press on with the work so will go down to see the state of the car and get it together for the road asap.

I have ordered a front and rear window from Joedro as well as the radiator cover which was missing from my 1981 (probably due to S Africa heat). Obviously, I am not planning to keep both cars in the same colour so something must give. Some thinking to do!

In a way the Auto is easier but probably not as much driving fun as the 5 Speed.

I will get pictures when I go down so we can track the progress.

    William,

Who is your source for the belts and hoses? What's the approximate cost?

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

For US readers - does anyone in the US have a good source for these parts?

Hi You have the link to MIE and then just go to parts and look at all the parts for the QPIII.. I will send you my invoice if you send a PM. They are helpful and fast. I also buy parts from Joedro who is on ebay as he is breaking QPIIIs. A lot of my contacts have got bits there. There are other suppliers I have bought from such as McGraths in the UK but more money

I am sourcing the new exhaust for the 1981. I think I will not get a Stebro as there was too much fitting to be done to make it work. I am researching other units but perhaps there are other ideas and knowledge. Do let me know. I will post what I get.

    William,

Thank you for your enquiry, the complete system price is £1150 plus vat
and we also offer a free fitting service.

    Regards

    Don. www.stainless-exhaust.com

    Hi

    Thanks for this email.

We manufacture a system in T304 stainless steel for your QuattroPorte. The benefit is that this should last the life of the car.

Our original pattern has Round tail-pipes (as shown) but we can make these with Flat tips. Yes - Please send us a picture of your's.

Normally we manufacture this system to the original design (except in stainless steel) but we could produce this to give a bit more V8 Presence, if required.

The cost for the system is GB 2940.00 including VAT and delivery.

You should receive this in about 12 days.

Please come back to me with any more questions?

Hi I had the car delivered today. Surprise - an electrical gremlin means the lights were on and battery dead so AA to the rescue. I did not drive it as the ujoints in the back made it unsafe. Anyway, after a long ride through central London we arrived at the shop (more on them later) and had the car up on the hoist for a good look over.

Definitely needing all the bushings for the car. Some undercarriage damage from a previous bang - lets just say the South African road must have put the odd dent in things. Surprisingly one on the front was filled! Need to think how we can pull this straight as it is part of the chassis. I have some ideas. I will fill in the list of observations in another post.
