Hello Everyone, My windows do not quite close and are slow. I understand the the grease gets pretty stiff after 27 years and could stand replacement. Can anyone tell me what the procedure for removing the door panels to access the lifting mechanism in a 400i? Thanks, Greg
I will do it from memory as I have done it several many times. - Speaker cover off, there is a screw behind it - underside of arm rest remove one screw pointing up - arm rest comes off by lifting rear, front has a tab on it - Now there are two bolts with 10mm heads (?) - there are two little screws on bottom edge of panel to supplement the plastic retainers - there is one more sneaky screw behind and in the general area of the pull handle - lift the inside door opening lever and remove the countersunk screw - sliding out the door opener surround takes some patience, there are two lips to disengage - pop out the plastic retainers on lower edge and rear of door -did I forget anything gang?? -now pull the lower part of panel away from door and lift the window felt piece requires panel go move to rear as you raise it How is my memory? This is the easy part, taking out the window winder gear box is a lot more fun! Ken
Thank you for the detailed instructions. I would never have found some of those screws. Since you have been inside these doors many times, do you think I am wasting my time attempting to service the winder? The whole process sounds like so much fun that I am going to clean up relay prongs before attacking the door itself. Maybe I'll get lucky and cleaner connections will up the motor's power. I'll post a result when I have one. Thanks again, Greg
Greg, There was a reference on this site to a British company that makes a device (probably a relay) to fit inside the door. http://www.btinternet.com/~frazer.smith1/ferrariwindow/index.html George
Greg There are big voltage losses and heat generated inside the fuse/relay panel. You are likely to see burned terminals on the connectors going to the two fuel pumps and possibly to some of the fans. The terminals are small and the loads can be high especially at start of those motors. It can be pretty ugly; the nice white plastic can be quite crispy in places. I have already added supplemental relays for the fuel pumps and this winter I am doing the same for the radiator fans. The control signals will all still come from the relay panel but not the main power to the motors. For you windows it would be easy to test power versus old grease by "hot wiring" straight from battery to motor and see how it lifts. (of course that would mean removing the door panel which is not really a big chore.) Ken
A rebuilt fuse and relay panel with a thicker and stronger board is available from GT Car Parts in Arizona and it goes a long way toward fixing those heat related burning issues that the OEM boards are infamous for. Mine has been installed for about 18 months and it works great.
This gets to be more fun all the time! I have a batch of new relays in stock for the surprises I assumed I'd meet. I have read elsewhere about remote relays. Not being an electrical whiz, can you explain how a remote relay would work? Do you run a fresh hot wire to the second relay or..? It sounds like an aftermarket board with a greater heat sink would be a good part to have in stock for winter project times. Thanks for helping with the learning curve! Greg
I have just ordered a set of these and will post the result. Judging from the description and the video on the referenced site, Frazer has got this issue cured. Greg
Greg, Congratulations on joining the 365 GT4 2+2/400/400i/412 club! When you get a chance post a few photos (unless I missed them somewhere along the line). I believe you'll find plenty of useful help from the participants in FerrariChat. Searching previous threads will also be helpful when specific issues arise. Al '84 400iA 50605 Central Florida
OK, I'll try. I suspect I'll have to try again though. Greg Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login

The Pantera guys upgrade the motors with a late model Taurus or Aerostar higher torque less draw motor, all the while without modifying the original winder set-up. http://www.panteraplace.com/page164.htm http://www.panteraplace.com/Page187.htm has anyone ever explored that avenue for the 365/400/412?
I have installed the modules I got from Frazer at http://www.btinternet.com/~frazer.sm...dow/index.html into my '84 400i. These black boxes have perked the window lift speed up to modern expectations. They are well worth the $96.00 apiece and the time of installation. This process also brought loose cable clamps to light. Now the windows run all the way up to fully closed. Can anyone tell me whether the windows are supposed to disappear fully into the door when down. If so, how is the adjustment made?
