I was researching upcoming film projcets and found a 2009 mention of a possible remake of the Steve McQueen classic Le Mans, starring Brad Pitt, Al Pacino and Penelope Cruz, due to be filmed in Portugal in 2010. Did this happen? German director Wolfgang Petersen, used Pitt for the film Troy.

As I recall the McQueen version, there was quite a bit of Ferrari vs. Porsche action at the finish

+1 Cornerswell, indeed I can by no means imagine such an attempt to end well.

Of course it will be all CGI. And, even worse, Sylvester Stallone will probably play the character McQueen was.

Hollywood has officially run out of ideas...

Pls. don't remind me- I had erased the Stallone / Indy Car movie completely from my memory.

The amount of actual racing footage in the original LeMans will probably never be duplicated. Nor can Steve McQueen be duplicated!

This rumor has been going around since 2007 and I've never seen any kind of real comment or confirmation. I believe that this rumor is largely based around the fact that A.J. Baime's book Go Like Hell: Ford, Ferrari, And Their Battle For Speed And Glory At Le Mans has been picked up by 20th Century Fox and developed into at least the scriptwriting phase.

Producer Lucas Foster (Crimson Tide, Mr. And Mrs. Smith, Man On Fire) commented on Adam Carolla's podcast last year saying he was approaching Pitt, Josh Brolin, Matt Damon, Eric Bana and Daniel Day-Lewis for the film and claimed he was looking for a director at that point.

He also said that he wanted to make the film "from the driver's perspective" and that he wanted to bring the experience of going 200mph, risking life and limb, to the audience.

So, he never specifically mentioned Le Mans the film, but he certainly invoked the memory of it.

I just hope Robert Loggia is cast as Enzo Ferrari... :D

They should do something new and different instead of a remake. I really like the audi film "Truth in 24."

Great racing footage, terrible movie. I hope they don't try to remake it. Maybe they'll remake Grand Prix instead

    That would be even worse.

Although I could see a new F1 movie with Ralph Fiennes as Graham Hill.

Dreamworks is developing a film adaptation of the James Hunt biography, Shunt: The Story Of James Hunt by Tom Rubython.

The role of Hunt was cast last week. If you want to see who it is, hit up this thread in the F1 section.

Le Mans cant be duplicated. It is the one and only racing film (perhaps besides grand prix).
remember the original film sequences of the race which Linge in his porsche made. remember renting the original track for some months ! , renting original cars from Jo Siffert, original racing drivers (impossible today !!! ca. 20 of the best racing drivers of the era are engaged for a film!!! and stay for several weeks at the set...), they crashed real cars, a 512 M burnt and please remember that David Piper lost his leg in an accident in the film, destroying his 917, they really drove 380 km/h...
so how can you duplicate this best film ever?

Why not? Cheap place to film stuff. Lots of lovely roads and a great racetrack sitting unused.

Offtopic: That is one of the greatest tv gags of all time...

    "... space..."

It takes guts to write a big broad gag, and then make the punchline subtle like that...

Back On Topic: Who would you cast in some of these roles? Enzo Ferrari, Henry Ford Jr., Carrol Shelby, Bruce McLaren, Chris Amon, Piers Courage, Dan Gurney, A.J. Foyt... going to be interesting to see who they get to play who...

My guess is the legalities, not having to pay bribes -er- fees to film there, or at least low 'fees'.

If it is a remake but with a current theme, you won't need anyone to play those roles, but if you did, there is one guy that comes halfway close to Enzo:

It is not a remake of anything. The film that is actually being made is A.J. Baime's book Go Like Hell: Ford, Ferrari, And Their Battle For Speed And Glory At Le Mans.

Amazon's product description reads: Go Like Hell tells the remarkable story of how Henry Ford II, with the help of a young visionary named Lee Iacocca and a former racing champion turned engineer, Carroll Shelby, concocted a scheme to reinvent the Ford company. They would enter the high-stakes world of European car racing, where an adventurous few threw safety and sanity to the wind. They would design, build, and race a car that could beat Ferrari at his own game at the most prestigious and brutal race in the world, something no American car had ever done.

This movie is actually in development to be made.

I think we may actually see a couple more 50's/60's/70's racing films. With this movie and the James Hunt biopic getting ready to shoot, there have to be some people paying attention in Hollywood.

How long before one of these guys Googles "Mille Miglia" or "Targa Florio"? These movies can now be made totally period, using digital backgrounds.

I don't want to start the whole CGI sucks thing going, but look at movies like 2005's King Kong, with its incredible 1933 vintage New York City, and you can see where say, Sicily of the 1950's, could be brought back to life on the screen.

There have been a lot of new developments, such as CAD CAM. Someone with a real Ferrari 250LM could roll it into a studio, they can use a process to map the car's surface
and reproduce it exactly in some other material. So the reproduced race cars would be dimensionally correct. And there's racing helmets now that look like "pudding bowls" but are legal to race in. I think there are ways to take old color footage and recprocess them to integrate them into a new movie of the Fifties or Sixties racing.

One problem is if the directing team waits to get a popular actor like Brad Pitt, those high flyers are booked years ahead so it could take a long time compared to hiring unknowns.

Another is, if they want to rent some real historics to be on camera, affording the insurance for cars that might be valued at $1 million each, such as the TR that Phil Hill won LeMans with.

I think the biggest impetus toward someone coming up with a film or TV series on LeMans racing in the Fifties and Sixties is the Goodwood Revival. Lord March has created a World Class event that makes it easy for directors, producers and set designers to see how it all ways in the golden days....

Found on the net in mid-Jan. 2011. I don't have cable but I reckon there is a channel called Starz who describe this project:

King of Speed - Design of a 10-episode miniseries created by Wolfgang Petersen and Ron Shelton. The story will revolve around the Enzo Ferrari, a car driver and founder of Scuderia Ferrari, with stories placed in national and international motor-racing circuits of the 1950 and 1960. The script is being developed based on public domain information and the book "Twice Around the Clock - The Yankees at LeMans, "by Tim Considine.

Yes Mickey Mouse club veterans, the same Tim Considine that played either Spin or Marty. I have been unable to find that book, does anyone know if it's in print yet?
