last night on leno, tanner faust appeared as a guest in support of the top gear show. clearly leno was in his glory as he got to discusss cars instead of hollwood topics.

he asked faust was was his favorite car? faust responded by saying he was a "930 turbo kinda guy"

hmmm....i actually gain some respect for that guy.

with all the cars he has access to, he chose the 930.as his fav. leno ageed with his choice. just kinda fun to seeing the 930 getting respect from a younger generation on tv last night.

he's not a fan of Ferrari's,he does like Porsche's. He has a Carrera GT that he broke some speed record with and almost killed himself in the process

I recall hearing that TOP USA was going to suck.

Top Gear USA is on History channel sundays at 10 EST... check your local listings ;)

It's ok. Foust is the best overall host, Ferrera is a good TV host (One friend can't stand his voice) and the other guy just needs to get off the show ASAP. No knowledge of cars, can't drive, can't interview, can't present.

I'm looking forward to a show that is tarting up on Speed (being piloted now) with Adam Corolla and Matt Ferrah, and some other guy who won a pulitzer for auto journalism in the WSJ... and John Sally.

I don't know if I still qualify as young (I'm 32), but I love 930s. They are near the top of my "cars to own someday" list.

Considering how relatively inexpensive they are right now (and for the foreseeable future), go get one. A decent driver will cost about $25-35K. That's chump change in Ferrari money.

I have to admit, I like the styling of the older 911's better than the newer ones. Especially the 964.

There's a reason a 25 year-old 930 costs nearly the same as a 996TT. ;) The average 930 enthusiast (at least the guys on Pelican, Rennlist, and Funf Gruppen) isn't cross-shopping a 996TT. To each his own.

The only turbo I have driven is a 930. Massive fun, it's always an adventure and sorta transports you to the past. That being said, I think I would prefer a 996 turbo. Shoot, I'd take a 997 turbo S ;)

lol...i was gonna say, who in their right mind looking for a mint 930 is going to say: Hmmm, for the same money i can get a 996tt?

a 930 is an icon. the 930 and 996tt buyer is not remotely the same.

Now, a 930 versus a 996 GT3--that's something I could see being compared. I've heard of early GT3s going for the forties. Totally different cars, but I'd imagine the guy who daily drives a GT3 would also enjoy daily driving a 930.

The 930 was a long-time "holy grail" car for me. I had posters of it through my teen years. When I finally got it, I was disappointed with the turbo lag, unbalanced handling and non-optimal gearing. On my way to owning a 930, I had early 911s and 80s 911s, which I preferred much more. After the 930, I finally moved over to F car ownership and wondered why I didn't do it sooner. Through this process, I learned how I much prefer driving lightweight, responsive and dynamically balanced cars. Having said this, I will always have a soft spot for 930s.

which ferrari are you driving that is more than a 100lbs lighter than a 930? i understand that nearly ANY car is better ballanced than a 930...no surprise there!
but responsive? i would say the trubo is pretty much razor sharp and the 4 sp. gear box is killer especially w/ any engine mods.

lag? yes, some but that is what makes it such a drivers car!!!

Unfortunately a real good one is getting harder to find. They are beautiful.

996tt and 930tt buyers aren't even from the same planet.

I agree it's like comparing a Daytona to a 550. Both great just different animals .

;-) I don't think I said that the F cars I own/owned/driven are lighter than the 930. I will say that the F cars I've driven felt more dynamically balanced than the 930. Also to clarify, I'm comparing stock cars and not modified cars.

WRT the 930 being a driver's car, I can respect your opinion and can say that I used to think the same way until I spent time in racing. Speaking of racing, I would love to experience a couple of 930 variants - 934 and 935. An ex pro racer friend of mine drove a restored 935 a couple of years ago; he was impressed how turbo lag was minimized via modified fuel system/turbo and understeer dialed out via updated suspension geometry/setup changes. Indeed, one can do a lot with technological modifications.

Elephant Racing makes fantastic suspension mods for 930 that dramatically improve the handling. I have spent time in racing, have some good handling road cars and IMO an Elephant Racing fitted 930 is a perfectly capable weapon

A good friend of mine let me barrow his 930 turbo for a long weekend. I fell in love with the rawness and styling. My favorite part was downshifting and letting the gear wind down to listen to it backfire.

I think he's not a fan of Ferrari DEALERS, rumor is when he was young and first started making good money he walked into an F dealer and they largely ignored/laughed at him.
He IS a big Lambo fan, though.

I wouldn't say that exactly, I am looking at both. I will be purchasing in about a year. One one hand, the 996tt is the perfect car or me. Easy to make stupid fast, great creature comforts and AC (almost a must in FL summers), wife approval, my job tunes them and works on them almost every day. On the other hand, I just love the curves and flares of the 930 and the simple rawness. The originality and the pureness of it, and maybe one day collectability. And yes, I'm a member of Pelican, Rennlist, and Funfgruppen, as well as 6spd and here, lol. Choices, choices.
