Be a Guinea Pig for Chrome OS & get a Notebook

I signed up but I'm sure 100k other people have, although I've heard about a few people already getting their notebooks.

 

Signed up for it. It'd be pretty cool.

For anyone else who applied, did they send you a confirmation email?

Google only has the confirmation screen after you sign up, no confirmation email. From what I've heard, if you're selected you get the laptop out of the blue - no email, tracking number, nothin' - complete surprise when it shows up on your doorstep.

I applied a few days ago. One friend got his in yesterday. Says he wasn't notified of the shipment, but came home and found a box on his porch. Nothing said google, no documentation, only a laptop and a power supply. Pretty cool if you ask me.

Not sure on how precise this is. Some of them seem to be a day off and not complete, but might give you an idea when yours will head your way.

It's neat, don't expect a consumer-ready device though!

 

My friend got one and I was playing around with it yesterday.
To be honest it leaves a lot to be desired, and I don't see who would buy one in the current state. I imagine the final version will be significantly lighter and the price point will be very low ($200?). This is like a new car being tested with ugly camo.

And yes there was no indication that my friend was getting one, just showed up one day. That link shows one being delivered to my zip code today, although I won't be home till after the holiday. So hopefully I forget about this and return home to a little brown box.

 

That's pretty much the point of it being free, and it being an easy quick internet only device. It doesn't need to be polished up to be appealing, but on a usability standpoint - quick boot up, and chrome OS, and NO CAPS LOCK KEY, those are big pluses for me.

 

Precisely what it is. There's a permanent bug report button in the status bar, for example.

I don't see who would buy one either, good thing you don't have to!

 

OK. Good summary.

For the sake of debate however, I'm not sure that "it doesn't need to be polished up to be appealing" is correct - It *may* work, and ultimately work well knowing Google & a little of Chrome, *but*, will it appeal to Joe Public like the iPad does?

I dunno the answer, but Apple seem to be the current masters of delivering appealing stuff - As a geek, Chrome OS looks promising, bus as an end user, I'm not so sure......

Well, you can BET that Apple is watching this VERY CLOSELY. No question.

But I agree - I think this is a "flash in the pan" at THIS STAGE ... sort of like the
3COM "Audrey Internet Appliance" (I still have one, new in the original box!!)
