Better selection and the ones over 25 years old can be brought over now.

So completely not cost effective... and it's not like the car is so impossible to find...The good ones over there are HIGHER than here and the cheaper ones are just like the handful of $22-$30K cars here... old, tired cars that will be expensive to keep running reliably.

I've usually been pleasantly surprised at the higher quality of cars available in Germany, especially on older cars than what is over here. You also don't need to worry about botched jobs to get them to pass DOT specs.

Re: the red 412 for sale here in Calgary.

You can judge by the amount of utter BS and irrelevant fluff contained within the ad text that this is a car most knowledgeable buyers would not even look at anyways.

    Good day Jay,

No worries... I was unsure if you saw it or not. Usually people forget to look for interesting cars around these parts... and there are certainly some interesting ones around... usually on the down-low, but surprising models none the less.

As for your investigation as to the market and what is a reasonable amount to pay... I would not worry about this too much, as this valuation is going to be subjective and all over the map. Ultimately, the price will be what you are prepared to pay, how long you will be prepared to wait, what condition you are willing to accept, and how much you really want a particular car... If you have patience and sense of adventure, then looking for the right car can be fun. However, waiting many months/years for the car at the magic price precludes you from enjoying car until some time in the future...

    Good luck with your search!

    Cheers,

    Sam

    I agree with Sam.
I was not looking for a car of any kind, let alone a Ferrari.
I bought the 400i because I knew the man who had it for sale and it dawned upon me that there is less sand in the ol' hour glass than there once was.
So for me it was A' Dios Corvette and hello Ferrari.

    All good points-

But when folks are quoting high $50s and UP... well that's getting into 550 territory, and that changes my perspective on the car.

Given the length of time some of these cars have been on the market and the stubborness of their owners- I think it's just a fairly stagnant market.

The only cars that seem to change hands are the rougher ebay cars.

In my 8 month long search for a Giallo 355 many of the cars I inquired about which I felt were priced too high were sold by the time I had worked up an offer- but that's a market with plenty of supply and plenty of demand.

Yeah again- I got a computer here too- I've inquired on that one already-

Guy is IMPOSSIBLE to deal with-

Car was NOT the recipient of a full respray- Appears to have some accident damage repaired (No data plates on door jamb)

Won't provide scans or fax service history- apparently wants any prospective buyer to simply trust his word that "It's a great car man"

Skip the dealer, call Tim Stanford's shop, ask him about it.

Well it would be interesting to see if you were right about the paintwork and repairs, oh well.

    Good luck with your search.

full_garage's speculation about possible repairs, would fit dstacy's observation of the lens replacements.
    Chassis 64165, for the record.

It's also for sale here (which traces back to the same phone # judge4re provided).

I know it's frustrating, but patience is you friend with any Ferrari, especially older ones.

Your entire market range is realistically 20K. Say from 26-46.

I can't believe you will go low, and probably not wanting or willing to go TOTM.

That means your market is 30-40. What you get for that is pretty much within $10,000 of each other. Not trying to be a wise guy. It's just that, as you already recognize, the market is very thin here.

Peoples willingness on both sides are likely as big a factor as condition.

If you aren't completely turned off by Craig Brody you may get a car there with very desirable colors and well maintained. The call to Tim Stanford is what I would do next if I had any interest in that car. And I find it attractive having just bought a car with that color combo.

I understand your quandary. Go low and get the most expensive F car yet. Go TOTM and get up close to the 456s. Good luck with your search. They are nice cars on the open roads.

If you are immediately underwhelmed after driving some of these cars why are you looking to buy one? For the cost of the purchase and upkeep if the car doesn’t impress you why waste your time and money. If you are mostly interested in the way the cars look there are several that have been available that have been swapped over to small block Chevy. One of these cars might suit you better due to the lower purchase and operating expenses and potentially higher performance of the Chevy engine.

Not trying to give you a bad time, I just see some contradictions in your posts.

You might find more willing sellers if you softened your approach a bit.

What approach is that? Asking respectful questions of sellers expecting honest answers?? Asking for the complete service history promised in the online ad- only to find out it's purely anecdotal. Asking if the price is at all negotiable only to be told "I don't need the money".. That approach?? Perhaps my sarcasm in some of these posts does not translate- but I am not buying the car in this thread- I'm hopefully gleaning some valuable market info from owners.

I've bought a LOT of cars over the years, but have never shopped for a vehicle with such limited supply- so perhaps the sellers are being arrogant for a reason.

I made a LOWBALL offer on my first fcar- a somewhat worn 308- they guy said "Can you pay me in cash...you know- actual money"..."Umm, yeah I guess I could do that"... and two days later I had a Ferrari in the garage. Paid top dollar for a nice 328 and the delaership absolutely bent over backwards to accommodate me. My 355 came from Doug Tabbut at Switchcars in Vegas- and he was honest and super friendly- even though I really paid far too little for the car.

That said there are some very presentable cars around owned by some very nice private sellers- and perhaps one of them will find their way into my garage.

Remember, you're buying the car, not going on a date or marrying the seller.

Who cares if they can't or won't tell you anything about the car? Go down there in person, see it, drive it, have a competent PPI done if you are still interested, bring the money and start haggling.

No matter what car you buy in what condition it is, expect and budget $5-10K to bring it up the standard that you would want the car to meet.

What you are trying to do is not that difficult. It should be fun. You don't sound as though you are having any fun. Life's too short to get worked up or pissy about buying a toy.

Used car dealers not being truthful or forthcoming with the facts?
