I never see any on the road. What happened to this car? Was it too expensive? Too boring? Too girl-y? Too similar to the 3 series? Whatever it was, it seems like it was a failure. Anyone know what happened?
what they were? 2011 is the current model run. they will offer the m 1 shortly. i just hope they do not call it an "m1" .
Nope. 1 series M coupe. Just rolls of the tip of the tongue. No one will get laid trying to impress a girl at a bar with that name...
I saw a few on the road when I was still in Houston and I liked them but not as much as the older M's.
Brother HAD one. Key word: had. Lemon-lawed after a year. Fuel pump twice, turbos once, and ecu once. He wasn't hard on the car at all and it was well maintained.
Agreed with the others on the price. I drove it when it first came out and it was a lot of fun. Just seemed like way too much money for what you get though.
Seemed to be a handy little package with 300 HP, what's not to love.... if you have both eyes poked out.
Not arguing one way or the other but they are easy to modify without too much cost. Superchips offers a $500 package on the 135i that can yield over 360HP/450tq. That's probably better than the 1 Series M Coupe will offer.
I think they look too much like a 3-series to really "stand out". too expensive and too heavy, but a used 135 might be a decent DD proposition.
Very true. The 1 shouldn't sell, fully loaded for more than $32K or $33K, imo. But by the time you get all you want, you could be in a 328/335.
S***loads of them in Europe. Not a failure. You guys in the US demand so much car for your dollar, that all small premium cars are too expensive compared to your other alternatives. 1-series is actually priced right on the money around here...
I didn't say that it was silly or not. They are fun little cars and it's sad that they are too expensive in your market. If they would have been priced more right, your streets would be flooded with them I know tons of people, mostly singles or couples without children, who bought them as no. 2 cars next to their weekend warriors. Luggage space is a joke, though, but that comes with the compact layout with RWD package...
Here they tried to market it as the new "2002". In Europe it was marketed as something cheaper and smaller than the 3 series, which makes sense. If you compare the 1 Series to a 2002, it falls WAY flat. The 2002 is still a classic in looks and sportiness. The 1 Series just looks like a smaller version of a 3.
Aha, THAT I did not know. I get that there are different markets that require different types of marketing, but I don't think it's fair to compare these two. Big fan of the 2002 Big fan of almost all the pre-Bangle BMW's... The next 6-series look gorgeous, though..!
I almost never see them, probably the price point as others have posted. The 3 series is kind of portly, so there is room for a compact sports coupe. But for the price even the BMW dealer steered me away from the 1, last year when I was car shopping for a new dd.
Yep, loads of them over here. The 5-door version is currently one of my wife's favourite cars. I think only the Coupe and the Convertible are available in the US. Given that the US doesn't have the same expenses involved in bigger cars like higher road/emissions taxes and extortionate fuel prices, there's not such an advantage to go with the smaller car and the 3-series makes more sense. In Europe where the roads are tighter, parking is more limited, etc... it's a very good car for the area. I rented a 118i for a couple of days when my other cars were having immense problems and were both in the shop. It's actually a very nice car to drive. The one I had was a 3-door hatchback, but you don't actually extend the wheelbase or lose any rigidity when opting for a 5-door version... you just gain easier access to the back seats - so it's really best as a 5-door hatchback. I don't see too many Coupes or Convertible 1-series cars though. I do like the look of them, but still don't really see the advantage of a new one of those over a slightly used 3-series. All the best, Andrew.
That's true, and that shouldn't be. They need to bring the 5-door to the US. There are people that love them and would've bought them, just that they didn't bring them here. Same goes for lots of international cars that just don't make it to the US. For example, the Honda Civic Si hatchback thing, the Mercedes A-Class (although people might think it dilutes the MB brand name), Suzuki Swift (I think they are going to start importing these), and the European Ford Focus'. Yeah, there are laws regarding how cars must be designed and safety standards, but the cars for America turn out so ugly. That crap piss's me off, why does Europe get all the hot cars???? If Ford had brought the Sierra Cosworth here they could hit a gold mine! Sorry off topic reply but daym!!!
The new car out in spring will be called the 1M. Calling it the M1 would confuse it with the two-seat (high performance) car produced in the 1970's - therefore the slight change. Expect to see the 1M out sometime mid-to-late spring.
I gotta say I do like the look of the 1M Coupe, even more so because it only comes as a 3 peddle stick-shift .. but price especially here in Singapore is questionable
