i saw this thing 4 years ago it looks like a factory worck but i do not know it was ever built i am not a 3.8 expert...so what is the story on this one ?? it sure is a beatiful car Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Pretty cool. Do you have pics with the top down? I wonder why it never made it to market. It probably would have killed Mondial cab sales back then.
Probably a cut car in my opinion. Maybe done by Straman?? I know they did some great work making convertibles. PDG
There was one 328 Spider built as a prototype / feasibility study - s/n 49543 according to Cavalino. I have never seen a picture of it, so I can't say whether this one is it or not.
italian car with its original plate it could be a Pavesi converion? i still think it may be a factory car it had an "ASI TARGA ORO" plate it is an historical certification for classic cars in italy it is given only to very original cars.....so i doubt it is a chop...but again who really knos?? 1984? That would be two years early for a 328, but probably about the right time for development cars - maybe that explains the early serial number. Wouldn't it be fascinating to see a genuine 328 cabriolet?
yes, i agree the ASI targa oro plate is pretty serious stuff and i higly doubt they would mark it 328 spider if it was only a Pavesi or aftermarket conversion hope someone here knows the all story p.s. it also had a MOdena plate
Note the fuel filler. I wonder where they moved the oil cooler. The second picture makes me wonder about the functionality of the side windows, too.
The even number on the plate is a 77 era #. Not likely the number of that car. 49543 is listed as a Giallo/Nero 328 Cabriolet with a body type # of 29 in the vin as opposed to 19 for a GTB or 20 for a GTS. That # is so far out of sequence Ferrari either pulled an early chassis and built a custom for feasibility or just pulled an unused #. Interesting car. Thanks for the pictures Emilio.
agree with you: i think the number on the plate is not the VIN but the number of ASI registration only more and more it looks like it is this 49543 car....it was also yellow-black
Someone correct me if I'm wrong but the # on the ASI plate is just an ASI specific # and NOT the serial number. That's why it's an even number.
Emilio, since this car looks to be the genuine article and they are your pictures do you mind if I keep a copy for the possible inclusion in a project I am working on?
From Emilio's first picture they look pretty functional, very similar to the windows on my GTB. Those are TERRIBLE! Wow talk about how not to do a chop. The 328 with the flying buttresses looks like the top stays above the deck, similar to the Mondial, and that would look much better than the flat decks on these 308s.
Prancing Horse did an article on the one-off 328 Spyder. This car looks very similar. IIRC, they made the buyer promise to not disclose its existance until after 328 production ended.
