I am about to list my car for sale in Hemmings and thought to mention it here as well. I spent a fortune to have the entire bodyshell redone by an XKE specialist and is photo documented. It is bolted to a rollable frame in epoxy primer and will need final fitting, blocking/sanding etc done prior to paint. It is a numbers matching, covered headlight car with a heritage certificate. The motor, trans and rear will need to be gone through plus an interior kit. Parts are labelled in bags and complete (I took the car apart myself).

The hardest and most expensive part of the restoration is done, so this would be great for someone who wants to build an E-type to their exact specifications without having to worry about the body being a time bomb covered by a nice paintjob which many are, especially the open cars.

My new job requires extensive travel and I won't be getting to the fun part of building this car myself anytime soon, so perhaps another enthusiast will take this forward.

I might also be offering my original condition '63 E-type roadster with some bolt-on upgrades for sale as well.

Classic Jaguar in Texas will charge up to 45K to restore a to a concours level monocoque w/ paint. They do 1st class work, check their website for some of their projects. I have no affiliation with them but have bought parts from them.

What was done to the restoration and how far did they go? Was the chrome refitted to the body and is everything there?

I had considered Classic Jaguar for the project and had a few conversations with Dan Mooney regarding my car. Instead, I decided on a local place to me in Philly who also specializes in these cars and all their nuances and had he same approach as CJ. I wanted to be able to "visit" the project and stay close to the work being performed. The car had been sitting for years in a shed with the bonnet removed so the car would fit. I have lots of before pics as well. The car needed floors, rockers, trunk floor, door skins and quarter panels but luckily had not been driven in this weakened state to compromise the rest of the shell. The entire shell was media blasted, braced, put on a special jig to hold it all together and all rotten parts cut out. I also had the sides of the cowel cut out so all the inner compartments of the structure could be blasted and epoxy-primed so this car will never rust again.

The metal man indicated that the bodyshell, although rusted in the usual placed was straight and all panels fit back into place without too much trouble. He had others in his shop which required extensive repair to prior accidents in order to get things straight.

I bought a bonnet that had been already restored from another Jag restoration shop down south as the bonnet the car came with had been off the car for a long time and something large had fallen on it rendering it good for parts only.

The car has zero filler so all patches and new panels can be clearly seen. The original chrome will need to be fitted up before being replated, however much of those surfaces had not been replaced so should be close. The bonnet will need to be fitted better to the car and all gaps adjusted.

The heritage cert lists the original color as opalescent (metallic) dark green with a biscuit interior and black top which I had planned to return the car to as that is my absolute favorite combination.

Ted, sounds like you had it done right. Any pics of its current state you want to post?

I am very pleased with the work and have built a good relationship with the shop who worked on it. The shop owner is also willing to take calls from prospective buyers concerning the work performed.

Things are a bit snowbound here in the northeast for the moment, however I am planning to get to the storage garage in the next few days and take some digital pics of the shell for everyone's viewing pleasure. It's a page out of the Classic Jaguar website.

martin robey was the original manufacturer of the bodies and are still producing them in england. would it have been better to just buy an entirely new shell?

The bodyshell on my car was straight and worth saving, not to mention wanting to keep the car as original as possible. Lindley Motors in Sanatoga performed the work and like Classic Jaguar and Terry, is a full service restoration facility for E-types.

Good to know! I hadn't heard of them - I had Terry work on my E-Type and couldn't have been happier.

    Good luck!
