28 cars at Bathurst in a 12 hour endurance race sounds like a pretty shallow field to me.

    There's 2 X F430's.

And it's probably a good thing the field has been culled out. Less safety car periods due to GT's bouncing off Yaris's over the top of the mountain. It was also providing a head ache for the organisers in regards to CAMS enforcing the 130% rule.

    Live Streaming confirmed for 2011

ALL THE EXCITEMENT of the Armor All Bathurst 12 Hour will reach a global audience after Event Organisers today confirmed that the popular live internet streaming – first introduced last year – will return in 2011.

The on-course television and commentary will again be broadcast via the Armor All Bathurst 12 Hour website, www.bathurst12hour.com.au, and interaction with the audience via social networking mediums including Facebook and Twitter will be a feature.

Despite limited notice prior to the Event, last year’s online coverage generated over 20,000 viewers from Australia and international viewers from the United States, Germany, New Zealand, Switzerland, Canada, Great Britain, Germany and several other nations.

Interaction via Twitter was substantial enough to see the tag ‘#12hour’ become a ‘trending topic’ in Australia during the course of the race.

The introduction of GT vehicles racing alongside production cars, along with five international entries, is expected to drive overseas interest higher this year whilst also offering local fans an avenue to support the Event should they not make it trackside.

The online coverage will supplement the three-hours of national broadcast time on ONE HD, to be shown post-Event.

“Our online coverage last year was really a toe in the water exercise, and it delivered results beyond our expectations,” Event Director James O’Brien said.

“The online coverage offers our sponsors a new way of generating exposure and allows our fans to follow the race live from green light to chequered flag whilst also getting involved with the commentary team and the competitors themselves.

“The level of interactivity is likely to grow this year as is the impact of the coverage on an international level thanks to the participation of entrants the like of Audi, Mosler, Ferrari and Porsche, amongst others.”

Roger Lago’s 2010 GT3 Cup Challenge winning Porsche will compete in next month’s Armor All Bathurst 12 Hour, despite the Queensland flood crisis.

Lago, who will be paired with Matt Kingsley and David Russell for the 12 Hour, was forced to relocate his car from Wayne Park Automotive’s Milton workshop last week in order to avoid flood damage.

With the water having wreaked havoc with Park’s workshop, turning over a 800 litre oil tank, Lago said he was lucky to get his car out when he did.

“The boys put the car up on the hoist, and they were going to leave it on the hoist, then they realised that they better get it down when they were walking in water late Tuesday,” Lago told Speedcafe.com.au.

“Then they had to ring the hoist manufacturer to step them through how to bring the hoist down manually, because the council or government had obviously dropped the power.

“Luckily they did get it out on Tuesday. What they did leave behind, such as rotors, pads, an unassembled gearbox, radios… they put up in the second story and it all went under.”

Having been moved to Lago’s own workshop at Hemmant, the car is being transported to the Porsche Centre Gold Coast today, where final preparation will be undertaken for Bathurst.

Lago will run in Class B on the Mountain, against five other Porsches – three 997s and two 996s.

The Queenslander says he is aiming for a class win, but outright positions are too hard to predict.

“If it’s wet it might play into the 996’s hands with ABS, but we’ve got a good car with good horsepower and a great driver line-up, so we’re really excited about it getting up there and doing well,” he said.

“We’re definitely looking for a class win. With only 28 cars, it’d be nice to sneak into the top 10 outright. There are nine outright (Class A) cars, and you wouldn’t think all of them will make the finish.

“A 12 Hour event is so long, you can have the best prepped car and things can happen that’s out of your control.

“Like everyone says, we’ll have our target time, and we won’t try and win it in the first hour – we’ll just see what everyone else is doing and act accordingly.”
