Hi guys, Have been driving my 458 for the past 2 days and found that the exhaust note is simply intoxicating once the bypass valves are opened. However, when the bypass valves are closed, the car sounds no louder than a Toyota. Therefore, I would like to ask if anyone here has already had their 458's bypass valves disabled ? I think it should be just as simple as plugging out the vacuum hose and covering it with a screw or golf tee. Correct me if I'm wrong. Also, I saw another thread on this forum that a member had a switch in his 599 under his steering column that does the following: 1) bypass valves disabled (always open) 2) bypass valves functions regularly (stock) What I'm wondering is what kind of controller is connected to the vacuum hose that is able to do the above mentioned? Hope someone in this forum can enlighten me. Thank you! Cheers Nycky
In the F355, the bypass valve is opened by vacuum (excepting with the capristo retrofit). In the F355, one can wire in a SPDT switch to the vacuum solenoid to open teh bypass valve when desired. I suspect the 458 will follow the same route.
Nycky- Capristo and a couple of other manufacturers make solenoid switches that allow you to open and close the valves with a remote control. It is also possible to have a switch set up that will override the solenoid on command. If the 458 follows suit with other late model Ferraris, the pneumatic valves are fail open, which means no vacuum and they stay open. Disconnecting and plugging the hoses to the valves will also work, but makes a permanent louder exhaust and may cost you a bit of low end torque. Sometimes it is nice to be quiet, so the Capristo solenoid or override switch are more elegant solutions. On most late model Ferraris the valves open around 3000 rpm and relatively high throttle. Kind of nice to have them closed on the highway when you do not need all that exhaust music. Taz Terry Phillips
I fully agree with Taz. Your best option is to install a Capristo or equivalent remote control unit. No need to rewire anything as your car is still under warranty. The remote control is plug and play and acts as a bridge between the stock valve operation and the forced open condition. Off=normal valve operation managed by the DME, On=forced open exhaust valves. The main advantage of such solution is that you don't need anymore to be in an almost full load trottle condition to get the valves opened even if on the F458, they open must faster compared to the F430. On both cars, to get the valves opened, rpm, gear and % of trottle are mesured before the DME decides to open them.
On the later 355's if the bypass valve remains open/closed beyond the design perameters the CEL will light. Will the f458 throw a CEL light under the same circumstances?
The CEL will light if you disconnect the signal link between the solenoid valve and the DME. Disconnecting this plug isn't a good idea as the DME is able to detect it. You'll get a P0475 (Malfunction found on the exhaust by-pass control solenoid valve - Sporadic contact). The only way to leave the exhaust valves open is to unplug the vacuum lines directly from the valves and plug them with a screw to avoid it sucking dirt.
Thats not true. I make a kit that we have installed in most of the 430 and scuderia's and now starting with the 458's in our area. System manual places vales in open condition or returns them to original factory operation. No check engine lights and no errors. $1037.12 plus tax installed. PM if anyone is interested in more information.
thanks all for the response ! i do believe that the 458's bypass valves are fail open by default as i can see the valves open when the engine is off. so i assume once the engine turns on, it goes from a really nice "vrooom.." and 3 seconds later when the vacuum activates the valves, it goes the toyota sound. thanks taz ! guess what i was looking for is called a solenoid switch. just the exact way i want things to be. just wondering, is that the same thing as what the 599 that i've explained in the first post have done to his car ? and also, other than capristo, anyone else manufacturing that solenoid switch ? thanks in advance ! nycky
Windsock- He was only referring to the 355. Some of the early valved cars were fail closed. Again easy to bypass, but now you want vacuum instead of shutting it off. On Maranellos, you can just rearrange the vacuum hoses to get full time vacuum. Opening the valves continuously on a 355 may cause engine damage according to one of our pros. Nycky- 599 owners have done both a switch in the cockpit to open the valves and a Capristo remote control. I am not aware of another manufacturer that sells their remote controls without buying an exhaust system. May be one, I just do not know. Vivid Racing and Exotica, two of our sponsors, would be good to ask. Scroll through the sponsors list. Taz Terry Phillips
$1000!!! what is so special about your kit? I bought my Capristo Remote + Control Unit for 310 Euros(=400 USD)... and I can't imagine any better quality than Capristo in terms of manifacturing + plug and play cabling. The cables are even insulated in heat protection tubes...
Sfefvan- was the installation easy ? And how does yours function ? Is it the programmable version ? Or the basic one ? I'm looking towards the capristo's option as well. Thanks!
I bought the basic one, just on/off. I will post a detailed DIY guide in the F430 section as soon I've done with it. Installation on itself is very easy but the DIY guide will be more about how to remove the different panels to gain access to the solenoid valves and how to fix the Capristo control unit properly, which I hope, will help people.
$400 but its not installed. Capristo is a stand alone unit and not integrated in to the factory controls ensuring no check engine lights and proper operation in all modes. Ours will also integrate into the factory switches and not look like anything has been added. Good luck you will get what you pay for. I would be interested in an honest report of the number hours the Capristo unit takes to install. I bet it takes more then four hours and that will get you near $1000 at any qualified shop.
Stef- Look forward to that. The on/off switch makes the most sense to me. Do it yourself or let the DME do it. Nothing complicated. Taz Terry Phillips
Hello, I already have the Capristo remote kit- would you pls send me the detailed installation instruction? It would be very helpfull. Walter
Sorry, forgot to update this thread as well The installation info is available in the following thread : http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=310472 Of course, as the exhaust valves on the 458 have a different location compared to the 430, you must consider adapting the related parts of this guide. Happy reading, Stef
Thread is over 2 years old. I would recommend the Capristo system, which you can easily google and find. Very simple installation. More info in the 458 forum than up here.
I installed the Capristo remote and it took 1 hour at the most. Very simple plug and play. Remove the rear diffuser, plug in the relays, secure the wires with zip ties, reinstall the diffuser, done.
Unless they made big changes for the 458 compared to earlier Ferraris, Race will not open the exhaust valves until you reach the rpm and power setting in the bypass valve schedule.
