There was a Belgium 1957 250 GT TdF restored with the plate 928 RO (red on a white background) as this example is.

My Guess it could be a UK Trade plate.. perhaps the driver didnt want to have a heavy or metal plate banging round on there and made ups some'falsies on word!
Belgian plates are a lot smaller and usually have taxation/registration stickers on them.

also theres a couple of (from what i recall) UK based cars in that pic.. the 400GT with custom body on to the left (pls correct me if im wrong) and the UDT 250GTO to the right.
perhaps it was driven there (looks like a concourse event) on 'Plates' as the reg number was on retention or being transfered!

One that comes to mind was the very late Hollywood Sport Cars ordered GTO. It was featured in the American magazine 'Automobile' when new. There was also a very early GTO that had that same 'red' instead of black treatment.

It was confirmed to me the old plate was for a Belgium registration when new - Ex. Swaters car. Coincidence how the new GTO has the same 'RO' ending...

Note the early GTO was the example with the yellow stripe around the beltline of the car. That example GTO was used for press photographs. It had the red front bumper and can be seen in the old original 1984 book series Ferrarissima issue #4. There is just the single image on page 87 of the issue that shows the front bumper treatment. In another view of the GTO it doesn't have the rectangular 'lump' on the rear deck above the engine; a characteristic of the early show cars. In it's place is mounted a vertical ridge parallel to the back window that is curved out at it's corners towards the rear of the car. Anybody know the serial number of this 'press' car GTO?

The magazine Ferrari italian style April 1985 also features a 288 GTO with the red front bumper in a number of pictures. These pictures feature the GTO without the yellow stripe around the beltline though. On page 14 is an excellent 'head on' view of the front of the GTO. Also on page 20 - 21 is a side view of the GTO running on the Fiorano test track. On the table of contents page is another head on view of the GTO parked on the Fiorano track. Sorry, unfortunately no scan images available...

Very few have the bumper strip painted red rather than the production satin black. Its always a post-production application.

Note that the quad lamps are driving lamps not headlights. The headlights are the pop-up unit type.

The car here is 58335 (EE.183.AK) , imaged when owned by Chris Vandagriff.

Just found this thread, I apologize if this has been covered before.

I was watching a special on the Speed Channel about the Goodwood Festival of Speed, and there was a short clip of a 288 GTO in white. How many white 288's exist, and I'm guessing they were not factory colors?

For the sake of accuracy that is not the UDT Laystall GTO, it is the ex David Piper car finished in the BP colours that it wore in period.

Of course, yes, too dark to be the UDT car.. I just saw it as a green GTO.. So I take it that pic is in the UK somewhere in time?

    Absolutely love this photo!
Reminds me of a situation I've been in long time ago.
Dutch border patrol spotted me driving a Smart on German plates in my (Dutch) home town back in 1999. The car was not on sale in my country yet (it was a factory demo) and after they stopped that weird looking vehicle they looked ready for the kill.
It turned out this funny excuse for a car was registered by Daimler-Benz and I had all the right papers to drive it with letters of approval from both Daimler and the Dutch Customs Office.
Boy were they dissapointed. They ended up making small talk about luggage space and making appologies for taking up my time.
