Removed the timing belt and tensioners today, should have new parts by tomorrow (after they went to the other Dave Monk in CT first). Pics were taken in high res, but uploaded here in less resolution. The belt and tensioners have 10 years and 15K miles on them. There is no cracking or damage to the belt and the tensioners feel really good, however all new Hill bearings and belt are going in. By the way, don't get your thumb stuck between the two belt pulleys when you try to rotate them! I don't have a photo of that but it hurts like a big dog.

What would be the reason why the belt is still in pretty good condition ? The interval from last major is over 3 times what Ferrari advices.

Car is regulary started and/or driven? :):)

Cars with cam belts that sit for many years are grenades ready to go off.:eek:

If I bought a car with cam belt/s that has not had the engine started in years, I would be sure to replace the cam belt/s before starting that engine. :):)

I wonder if someone could shed light on this..

I never realy understood the cam belt religious change thing.. every 3 years whether the car is driven or not.
    It costs big $$

I dont see how if you put a cam belt on a car and not drive at all that magically after 3 years you need to change it--- and replace it with a ferrari item that has been sitting on the shelf for 20 years and then its all ok..

    Maybe im missing something...?

Everytime ive done a major my cambelts were pristine..

I would also like to know what climate the car is/was in for those 10 years ie...warm all year around, or east coast 6 months cold/6 months warm

My car is driven very regularly, the last major was done in Aug 2006, which means i'm coming up on 5 years.
On the last major, all cam seals and o-rings were changed, water pump rebuilt, tensioners, timing belt, all water hoses, a complete tune-up etc were all done, to the tune of $11,836.65.

The car had 58,676 miles then, it has 77,100 miles on it now. SO, at the 5 year mark, it will probably have about 21-22K miles since the last major.

I am able to drive the car year-round, I live in a dry warm climate... So, i'm still on the fence about doing the major this year, but if I DO, I will replace the belt, tensioners, and the alternator/AC belt.... that's it, and i'll probably attempt to do it myself in my garage.
If i'm gonna blow $5K on this, i'm gonna have a nifty MaxJax lift AND the peace of mind to show for it... not JUSTthe latter.

I bought mine off a guy in Alabama last year, he stated he drove it pretty regularly and kept it in the garage. I have driven it regularly since I have had it too and I keep it in the garage. Parts made it here from the other D Monk in CT today - Whoo Hoo, so I worked on it some this evening. Drilled the weep holes with the fixture, installed new cam seals, o-rings, hill tensioners and belt as well as swapped shims on the buckets until I got all the clearances in specification. I am still awaiting my degree wheel for a final check of the timing before I call it done, however, as of now all the marks and TDC on the engine are where they were when I took it down. Still awaiting my covers from my buddy who is re-powder coating them - the first round crinkle didn't look so hot so we stripped them and are trying it again. I do have one technical question though - what is the clearance between the belt and the belt guides that mount to the timing cover supposed to be?

    Big $$ = big profit$

The more often they are done, the more often they get to collect those profits. ;) Plus if you fail to do something according to the "official" schedule it make it that much easier to say "not our fault".

    Capiche?

    That's my .05¢ worth.

I just bought a very clean 2002 575 with 4k miles on it. Belt tensioners were changed in 2007 at 2500 miles. I think the manual says inspect them every 5k and change every 15k.
Opinions very widely on changing. Any guidance would be appreciated. Also, are there any telltale signs when changing is needed or do they just explode or something?
