I am in the process of trying to get a Maryland State Inspection done on a 2009 430 Scuderia, but this one state trooper refuses to pass the car without a documented "rotor discard weight". The only spec we have been able to obtain from dealers is the initial width of the rotor, not the weight at which they should be replaced. Note, these are the ceramic rotors. Does anybody have any info that may be of help?

I have a 599 rotor in front of me. Printed on the "hat" is 6480 g which is the throw away weight I think.....that being said, I weighed the rotor (and it was severely damaged through track use) and it now shows 6350 grams.

Tell the officer that the discard weight is laser etched into the hat. The wheel will most likely need to be removed to see it.

I will weigh a new rotor in a moment to verify if the printed weight is different from the unused weight.

Thank you so much. If possible would you mind providing the new and throwaway weights for the rear rotors as well?

I don't have any Scud rotors here other than what is on a pre-owned. Let me check with FoSF and see if they have any.

All they have is a set of used rears. They show 4492 grams printed.

May want to call your dealer and see if they have any new/used in stock and get them to tell you what the printed weight is.

Sorry I can't be of more help. Sales would kill me if I took a scud off the floor. I went out to look at it, but cannot see the etching. (covered by the wheel)

I am curious. What is the use "rotor discard weight" used for?

Like the 'minimum thickness' found on a steel rotor, the discard weight is that which is deemed unuseable, as such shops will/should not reinstall to vehicles..

For my 2009 Scuderia this is what I have:

Front: New weight: 6,224g (13.7215 lbs). Thickness 35.5 mm
    Minimum weight: 6,124g (13.4011 lbs)

Rear: New weight 4,520g (9.9649 lbs). Thickness 33.5mm
    Minimum weight: 4,465g (9.8436 lbs)

CCB rotors wear by weight, and they also heat cycle (like race compound tires).

Do you mind sharing the name of the Police officer? I might know him and I could email him.

This information is printed on each rotor. The weights above include the hats, I put both front and rear rotors on a bathroom scale, and they read 13.5 and 10 lbs respectively.

If the Maryland Police officer needs to verifiy the weight, they need to do so in a calibrated scale (the ones used by jewelers work), because we are looking at differences of 0.22 lbs, something negligible.

Unfortunately, this is the only documented way to verify the conditions of CCB rotors (applies to all Ferraris with CCB since the Stradale up to today's F458 and GTO).

These weight marks are in all the CCB rotors on production cars today, Audi, Porsche, Lamb, Ferrari, Aston, all these cars use Brembo CCB.

What the F does the weight of a GD rotor have to do with passing inspection for tags on a one-year old car????

All I do for my 355 is take it to DEQ and they hook the emissions test up to the car. If you pass you get your tags...

That sounds like a pretty thorough state inspection. Is he actually going to take the rotors off and weigh them? Will he be responsible for any damage if he mishandles them?

There's thorough behavior, and there's ridiculous behavior. This is ridiculous behavior. Absurd.

Absurd requirement. Colorado use to have "safety inspections" that were required every year. Any licensed inspection station (a guy with a garage and a socket set) could be an "inspector". They finally got rid of the requirement for safety inspections and it affected the accident rate approximately 0 percent.

With some of the POS cars driving around everyday, you would think they would pass a 1 year old Scud..

Glad I will never live in the north east. Stupid laws that are nothing more than revenuing for the local govt's nothing more, nothing less.

I lived in Atlanta from birth until 2 years ago (32 years) they have emissions tests no safety, I now live in Birmingham due to work. I will always keep an AL address, no vehicle laws (that are enforced) or inspections at all here, and close to no other laws here. Freedom is great.

It's amazing to me that he even knows that these are CCBs and the way to measure wear is via weights. But beyond that, it's ridiculous to demand to weigh them to pass inspection, especially on such a new car. Do they remove the rotors? Are they qualified and will they agree not to damage them or reimburse you if they do?

It seems unlikely they would even have a scale of sufficient sensitivity and accuracy. Based on the weights above, the difference of 4520-4465=55g 55g is about a shade less than 2 ounces. That is about the weight of a ping pong ball or 12 sheets of paper!

That's because you live in Oregon! Better yet, in most places in Oregon, all you do is go online and type in your credit card number, and then check your mailbox.

Very cool information.......... never too late to learn something. (I had also seen where some disc's have a imbedded "dot" in them as a wear indicator......... is that true on all, and if so can that be used vs weight?) Or is possibly weight used as a determining factor in not only wear but safety....?

Welcome to the State of Maryland. There are more absurd things in this state than I have fingers and toes to count them on....

I'm also trying to find a place to do an inspection on a pretty new 458.

We call it the Peoples Republic of Maryland. The people in communist China have far great freedom than we do here in Maryland. And never mind the 9% plus state and local income tax we pay not to mention elimination of all tax deductions on incomes above $100,000 ! Sorry, I forgot to mention state 15% estate tax on top of any federal estate tax. Please forgive the rant, i just had to vent. Anyway, this is the most absurd inspection on an essentially new, very safe car!!!

How do the scuderia rotors differ from the f430 challenge ones?
I have measurements from some after being used on challenge rotors at: 36.3mm front thickness and 34.6 in the rear thickness
